And boy am I glad we didn't see it at the theatre. This movie reduced me to a blubbering fool! And I much prefer to blubber in the privacy of my own home.

I loved the period details, the clothes, the dances, the social interactions and the relationship between Jane and Tom.

The beginning was a little bit on the slow side, my husband fell asleep, but I didn't mind.

I loved this movie, I thought it was wonderful, the acting was wonderful, the story was moving, the costumes were beautiful. It made me want to read Jane Austen's books.B000ZIZ0RA11A2QXMR7OWBTZ3BA2QXMR7OWBTZ3BM. MoodyFlorida, USA32009-05-26Horribly DisappointingFirst, I will be upfront: I didn't get very far in this movie. There are few movies that I will stop in the middle (in fact, I can't think of any), but this was one of them. I was very disappointed with this movie. It makes fun of Jane Austen. It criticizes everything about Jane Austen's time period. Everything in the movie seemed designed to mock, from the pond filled with scum in front of a great house to an unpolished mirror that could hardly be looked in to show the sisters reflections. It blatantly attacks Christianity ( or being faithful to your spouse before you ever even meet them, by keeping your wedding vows). As strange as it sounds, I felt like I was being attacked through the movie screen. It is a movie full of lies. Particularly the lie that by being faithful to your spouse you are missing out. The opposite is true. Hopefully, the movie improved by the end, but I couldn't make it that far to find out.B000ZIZ0RA50A109XCZSNC3CC5A109XCZSNC3CC5J. A. Shortnew rochelle, new york United States02009-05-07Loving Jane and TOM!!!!What a wonderful, breath taking film. It was a total delight to watch and I must confess I have watched it again and again. It is a beautiful love story and tugs at your heartstrings with the realization that their hopes to be together forever would never be. I do not profess to know all that much about Jane's life but I have read enough to believe that they did love each other, no matter how brief the relationship.I also believe that what she felt for Tom Lefroy was a life altering experience for her. If the real Tom Lefroy was anything like James McAvoy, then who among us does not understand the attraction between these two. McAvoy's Lefroy and Hathaway's Austen.....what a match!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not in an excusable way--on impulse, perhaps, from a bargain bin, on a rainy day, with a cold coming on. No. Having seen it in the theater and knowing exactly what I was getting, I looked up the release date and pre-ordered it.

You can't think how difficult it is for such a nit-picker as I to swallow my pride (which is considerable) and my prejudice (even greater) and admit that I like this film. Even knowing just how much of the story is true (a very little bit), I enjoy imagining myself in Jane Austen's world and family. Anne Hathaway does a lovely job as Jane; likewise Anna Maxwell Martin as Cassandra. And, oh, yes, despite my disgust with Hollywood's obligatory but unfounded portrayal of Tom Lefroy as a rake, I completely fell for James McAvoy's devasting charm.

Why, then, only three stars for this sweet story, my guilty pleasure? Really I intend three and a half, but the low rating is due to the greatest irony in a film greatly concerned with irony (if not, perhaps, with a good definition of same). That while the creators eagerly depicted Jane Austen as a courageous, intelligent, forward-thinking young woman, struggling against archaic societal constraints, they completely belittle her creative genius. The portrayals of her family and acquaintences suggest that she drew most of her characters directly from them. Even her most famous phrase, "It is a truth universally acknowledged," is uttered in the movie not by Jane, but by one of her suitors. Perhaps this was intended simply as an allusion for the Austen fans in the audience; but I find any hint that she couldn't write it on her own quite insulting indeed--much worse than any other liberty taken with her biography.

Enjoy the period romance, the lovely soundtrack, the literary allusions, as I do. Just remember that it is only a story.Product DescriptionAnne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada, The Princess Diaries) gives a radiant performance as a young, love-struck Jane Austen in the witty and engaging romantic comedy Becoming Jane from Miramax Films. It s the untold romance that inspired the novels of one of the world s most celebrated authors. When the dashing Tom Lefroy (James McAvoy, The Last King Of Scotland), a reckless and penniless lawyer-to-be, enters Jane s life, he offends the emerging writer s sense and sensibility. Soon their clashing egos set off sparks that ignite a passionate romance and fuel Jane s dream of doing the unthinkable marrying for love. Becoming Jane, also starring the acclaimed Maggie Smith, James Cromwell and Julie Walters, is an enchanting and imaginative film you ll fall head over heels forAmazon.comLike Molière, which was released in theaters around the same time, Becoming Jane isn't a conventional biopic. Instead, Julian Jarrold (White Teeth) expands on events from Jane Austen's life that may have shaped her fiction. To his credit, he doesn't stray too far from the facts. In 1795, 20-year-old Jane (Anne Hathaway with believable British accent) is an aspiring author. Her parents (Julie Walters and James Cromwell) married for love, and money is tight. They hope to see their youngest daughter make a more lucrative match, and there's a besotted local, Mr. Wisley (Laurence Fox, son of actor James Fox), who would be happy to oblige. Unfortunately, Jane isn't interested. Then, she meets brash law student Tom (The Last King of Scotland's James McAvoy), while he's staying with relatives in rural Hampshire. As in many Austen novels, it isn't love at first sight--but rather irritation. Just as affection begins to bloom, Tom has to return to London, and Wisley, whose financial prospects are superior, proposes. To complicate matters, Tom's uncle (Ian Richardson in his final performance) disapproves of the outspoken young lady just as much as Wisley's aunt (Maggie Smith, lending the proceedings some subtle humor). Had Austen penned the script, Tom and Wisley would be combined into one person, but life doesn't work that way--and nor does Becoming Jane. Though Jarrold's effort may not be as swoon-worthy as Joe Wright's Pride and Prejudice, it remains true to the spirit of the author's work. --Kathleen C. TaylorGFTBiloxi, MS USA02009-01-29Memorable Performances Overcome Pedestrian ScriptIt seems that British cinema has fallen into a rut, at least where comedy is concerned: like numerous other films of the past decade, KINKY BOOTS combines a touch of mischief, a touch of sex, a lot of "lets feel good," and a "let's root for the underdog" plot. But although the formula has become as pedestrian and predictable as last year's high heels, KINKY BOOTS still shines in terms of performances, with Chiwetel Ejiofor leading the cast as a professional drag queen in search of footwear that won't break down in the middle of a nightclub act.

Very, very, very loosely suggested by an English shoe factory that faced similar marketing woes and took a similar route, KINKY BOOTS is the tale of Charlie Price (Joel Edgerton), who unwillingly inherits a shoe factory and then discovers that it is on the verge of bankruptcy. A trip to London leads him to a chance encounter with drag queen Lola (Ejiofor), who has no end of problem with footwear--an encounter that inspires Price to go into the niche market of women's style footwear for men. Charlie and Lola join forces to design the new line, but needless to say things don't go as smoothly as they wish. Charlie's bride-to-be opposes the whole thing; the factory workers aren't wild about having a drag queen in their midst; and both Charlie and Lola have personal issues to work through in the process.

Although the concept is clever, the script is not: you can easily see around each and every bend and forecast every plot turn long before it arrives on the screen. But the performances make the thing work. As previously mentioned, the big noise here is Chiwetel Ejiofor, best known for such films as PRETTY DIRTY THINGS and AMERICAN GANGSTER, who puts over Lola in a major way: from stage act to factory floor, he is entirely believeable, extremely sympathetic, and often downright hilarious. Edgerton is equally well cast as the conflicted factory owner, and the cast is well-rounded out by such memorable supporting players as Sarah Jane Potts, Jemima Rooper, and Stephen Marcus, to name but a few.

When all is said and done, KINKY BOOTS is a charming film that is a shade too formula for its own good--but even so it is worth a look. The DVD package includes two brief features, one on the factory that inspired the story and a standard "making of;" there is also a director and cast commentary. Recommended, but don't expect too much.

GFT, Amazon Reviewer
B000GFLE1S50A3SCUF4XM82RH2A3SCUF4XM82RH2Melinda KohnUSA02009-01-27These "Boots" are made for walking!I managed to miss this movie for a long time and glad I happened upon it. It's just a fabulous story. Complete with "Rags to Riches," "What do I do NOW?," "What makes a man?", and "What is most valuable and important in our lives?" themes. Sounds esoteric when I explain it that way. But when played by the most excellent Chiwetel Ejiofor, it's not. Joel Edgerton and Sarah Jane Potts turn in excellent performances as do all the actors and supporting cast, across the board. There's singing at times too, if you like that sort of thing. While the movie doesn't provide any real surprises (or even any scenes as suggestive as its title might suggest), the English film (which is loosely based on a true story) is highly entertaining that will delight fans of both comedy and shoes. --Jae-Ha KimB000ERU8EWKinky BootsB000OPOAKCThe Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert (Extra Frills Edition)B0000714BPTo Wong Foo Thanks for Everything Julie NewmarB000ETRCN0Mrs. Henderson Presents (Widescreen Edition)B0011KQSZ4Death at a Funeral579588General579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video722735011General AAS579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video163371General163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video291113Buddy Films291103By Theme163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video14155001Comedy of Manners291103By Theme163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video14155041Gender Bending291103By Theme163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video163427General163420Music Video & Concerts404276Genres130DVD139452Video412142Bassett, Linda411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video442378Pugh, Robert440340( P )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video458226Jarrold, Julian458164( J )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355715011General355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video468392All Titles468390Miramax Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video541276Comedy468390Miramax Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video541278Drama468390Miramax Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579532( K )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1265183011Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray Disc Trade-In44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405387011PG-13405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620920112000 & Newer562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603113011Dolby603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671508011Dolby671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR2MM9N5ZPSGF9Gay Movie EnjoymentR3IAF7APR9JBQBBest Drag Queen MooviesRLQZ8TYX9C2V2Gender TalkR11W0K9X9GUIVOMovies for a Rainy AfternoonR3005E5RCWFD84The Best of BritishR2HRJ8YHFLSZ8SRai's Fave MoviesR3NALLPUARSFRStop romantic comediesRYPN6UBANGVH1Funniest movies I've ever seenR2J5NDQ668SBL0Labor Day Film FestRM1OGN1YOVQSBDVDs My Roommate has made me watchB0000X2EU6http://www.amazon.com/Cracker-2-Robbie-Coltrane/dp/B0000X2EU6%3FSubscriptionId%3D1DWXK7HJTP76664KT902%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB0000X2EU611850http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41V65SYT8JL._SL75_.jpg7560http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41V65SYT8JL._SL160_.jpg160128http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41V65SYT8JL.jpg500400http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41V65SYT8JL._SL30_.jpg3024http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41V65SYT8JL._SL75_.jpg7560http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41V65SYT8JL._SL160_.jpg160128http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41V65SYT8JL.jpg500400Robbie ColtraneGeraldine SomervilleKieran O'BrienLorcan CranitchBarbara Flynn1.33:1NR (Not Rated)DVDWarner BrothersJimmy McGovernCharles McDougallJean StewartJulian JarroldMichael WinterbottomRichard Standeven9780783123936AC-3Box setClosed-captionedColorDolbyDVDNTSC0783123930100EnglishOriginal Language3998USD$39.98Hbo Home VideoHBOD99077D311074065570DVDABIS_DVDHbo Home Video12004-02-24468Hbo Home Video1998-03-07Cracker - Series 2026359907722449USD$4.49699USD$6.99161200005.0102B0000X2EU650A1A71FUA46JTOYA1A71FUA46JTOYric03Rossendale, England.02009-01-11Superb DramaThis review is about the episode 'To Be Somebody', which is available separately in the UK. I first watched this when it aired in 1994. It was the first episode of Cracker I watched and I thought it was fantastic. I was only 20. Add the best part of 15 years and I've finally watched it again... So now what do I make of it?

I'm surprised I didn't come back to this sooner. Coltrane is perfect as Fitz. Many have tried to play the angry, hard-drinking detective but nobody comes within a country mile of this acid-tongued colossus. He is hilarious at times, genius, tragic and brutal at others. A chain-smoking, workaholic, alocoholic, womanizer who also likes an 'occasional' flutter. Add to that, the utterly convincing performance of Robert Carlyle as psychotic skin headed killer, Albie Kinsella; the beautiful and poignant writing of Jimmy McGovern; and a rock-solid supporting cast (including a great Christopher Eccleston, Ricky Tomlinson and sultry Geraldine Somerville as `Panhandle') and it is pretty incomparable.

If you like crime dramas and haven't seen Cracker, get this episode, you'll probably buy the boxset. If, like me, you thought it was good at the time but have forgotten just how good, do yourself a favour and give it another go, you won't be disappointed.B0000X2EU650A31335U0SAOJLHA31335U0SAOJLHJoseph M. Robbie Coltrane is perfectly cast as the brilliant criminal psychologist with a ironically disastrous personal life. My partner usually can't concentrate for five minutes, but she's glued to the screen whenever Cracker is on.DescriptionSecond in a series of three DVD releases of the popular PBS Mystery series; including 9 hours of programming. Robbie Coltrane's outstanding creation of 'Fitz', in the PBS series Cracker 1 continues his journey as a criminal psychologist in three more episodes: To be a Somebody, The Big Crunch, and Men Should Weep. 'Fitz' combats personal crises and professional challenges when racism, religion, and murder get in his way.Amazon.comCracker: Series 1 was fine--a terrific premiere and two interesting sequels introduced freelance police psychologist Eddie "Fitz" Fitzgerald (Robbie Coltrane) and his family and colleagues—but series 2 is unexpectedly and vastly superior. The three miniseries included on these discs are exemplary thrillers (even better than the first trio), but the real leap forward is in the stories' deepening complexity and fascinating intertwining of Fitz's strained relationships and work.
"To Be a Somebody" begins where series 1 left off. Fitz and his wife, Judith (Barbara Flynn), and two kids are living together again, but the rotund profiler--still juggling multiple addictions to booze, gambling, nicotine, and overall self-destructiveness--is on a new, downward spiral. His name is also mud with Detective Chief Inspector Bilborough (Christopher Eccleston) and would-be lover and police detective Jane "Panhandle" Penhaligon (Geraldine Somerville). But a series of class-anger killings by a psychotic welder-turned-skinhead pulls Fitz into a case so disastrous that every major and minor character is profoundly affected. Portraying the murderer, Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting) is brilliant, as terrifying and sympathetic as Taxi Driver's Travis Bickle.
The emotional and dramatic fallout of "To Be Somebody" carries over to "The Big Crunch," in which Fitz's relationship with Jane intensifies while he pursues a religious cult that may be responsible for a girl's abduction. The final story, "Men Should Weep," concerns an investigation into an unnerving string of rapes by a masked, mutilated cab driver. More startling is a link between these crimes and eruptive events in the lives of Fitz, Judith, Jane, and thickheaded, thorn-in-the-side copper Jimmy Beck (Lorcan Cranitch). A breathtaking climax and shocking, cliffhanger ending make "Men Should Weep" a must-see for thriller fans. --Tom KeoghB0001ADB50Cracker - The Complete Third SeasonB0000AYJVACracker: Series 1B000R349H0Cracker: A New TerrorB0000AYJV5Prime Suspect 1B0000X2ET2Prime Suspect 2163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722754011General AAS291513Television163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video923878General512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video722787011General AAS541980Crime512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video292287Mystery512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video415914General163450Television404276Genres130DVD139452Video15324461Cracker (UK)357310011C356468011TV Series By Letter163450Television404276Genres130DVD139452Video1048638All HBO Titles301540HBO251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video15218551HBO Films301540HBO251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video722822011General AAS301540HBO251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video599830Drama501230Boxed Sets251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video599836Television501230Boxed Sets251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video458226Jarrold, Julian458164( J )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video458322Jones, Simon Cellan458164( J )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video463558Winterbottom, Michael463154( W )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579516( C )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video680904011All Titles680903011The Foreign Movies & TV Sale: DVDs as low as $6.99251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video680906011Boxed Sets680903011The Foreign Movies & TV Sale: DVDs as low as $6.99251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video388395011Boxed Set390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620910111990 - 1999562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603113011Dolby603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671502011Boxed Set603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671508011Dolby671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR1MRDH08L0E95Bmy favorite British Tv shows!!!R3SFASJ1C3RRQ2The Best TV Shows3H1WPI0G4QRXXThe Greatest Movie Series Of All Time22UYJHF1C53JBTelevision Shows Reviewed, or to be Reviewed 5/23/051C1XZ7SXARANFGreat British Television ShowsS6R3AXW0WFR7Great British TVB0002XVRGGhttp://www.amazon.com/Great-Expectations-Masterpiece-Theatre-1999/dp/B0002XVRGG%3FSubscriptionId%3D1DWXK7HJTP76664KT902%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB0002XVRGG18074http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51-f0%2B7ELgL._SL75_.jpg7551http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51-f0%2B7ELgL._SL160_.jpg160108http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51-f0%2B7ELgL.jpg500338http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51-f0%2B7ELgL._SL30_.jpg3020http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51-f0%2B7ELgL._SL75_.jpg7551http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51-f0%2B7ELgL._SL160_.jpg160108http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51-f0%2B7ELgL.jpg500338Ioan Gruffudd; Justine Waddell; Charlotte Rampling; Angela Sims; Hugh Lloyd; Laila Morse; Gemma Gregory; Sarah Durham (II); Roland Manookian; Nicholas Woodeson; Ian McDiarmid; Jo Cameron Brown; Selina Cadell; Clive Russell; Philippa Stanton; Laurence Dobiesz; Nicholas Blane; Bernard Hill; Timothy Tranter; Sandra Voe1.33:1UnratedDVDWGBH BOSTON VIDEOJulian Jarrold9781593752064Closed-captionedColorDVDNTSC159375206720EnglishOriginal LanguageUnknownGreekOriginal Language2995USD$29.95WGBH BOSTON3375911999-05-095871018542DVDABIS_DVDWGBH BOSTON12004-09-28180WGBH BOSTON1999-05-09Great Expectations (Masterpiece Theatre, 1999)7834213375962499USD$24.992499USD$24.99420011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DER0.00NewnewyqGCOv%2FpAkAr5iHMeoU6V82WxW99HlkU28Osq6aL%2BmweCC5OZC7JhM8MMcAMZ80svz%2BYPQaCeO7UE0NKqTGUhA%3D%3D2499USD$24.99496USD$4.9617Temporarily out of stock. However, I did not greatly enjoy this adaptation as many people have.

My reasons:

- The picture quality is not much better than the 1981 version. Therefore, my eyes are just as content to watch the 1981 version, which develops the characters much better (even if it drags on at times.)

- This production does not develop Orick's character, or Estella's character early in the production. In fact, Mr. Pumblechook and other characters are also not as developed as I would have wished.

- Dickens' novel drags on in the middle. This production greatly contracts the plot in the central half of the novel. For example, Bentley Drummel and Matthew Pocket's characters are not developed very well in the middle part of this work. Matthew's father is nearly eliminated.

- This words spoken in this production have been updated from the 1981 adaptation and the novel. In fact, the 1974 adaptation is more accurate than this 1999 production as pertains to including famous quotes from the novel.

One positive of this adaptation is that the mood (the psychology) of this adaptation is better than the 1981 version or any other version I have seen. A second positive is that the acting is this production is just as good as the 1981 adaptation.

In summary:
I prefer the 1981 version best (even though I would only give it a 4 star). However, this production is better than the 1974 Michael York/Sarah Miles adaptation, which completely eliminates the character of Orlick.

For people who want a film to watch for pleasure (rather than to prepare for a major content examination), this adaptation may be the most interesting and best choice. Otherwise, I would recommend the much longer 1981 adaptation. B0002XVRGG32A2MLP4UGTF1RX4A2MLP4UGTF1RX4M. FUSCOyawnmowerNEW YORK, NY USA22008-12-30good production . . bad dvdThis latest version of Dickens' sprawling novel of love, jealousy, betrayal, and redemption is a faithful (or as much as possible, even in a 3-hr production) rendering. It is well cast, with Ioan Gruffudd as the most handsome Pip on film, and Charlotte Rampling giving her usual regal performance as Miss Havisham.

Production design is good, with grim revisionist views of 18th century London typical of modern adaptations. Photography is first rate.

What is unacceptable is that the DVD is, apparently, recorded straight off the PBS broadcast -- just as if you recorded it yourself -- complete with all the ads for Mobil, lugubrious intoductions by the pedantic host of Masterpiece Theatre, and PBS icons lingering for 30 seconds at a time throughout the film. Distracting, annoying, and unacceptable.

Order the Region 2 disc from the BBC if you can play it. One should not pay a high price for a DVD that one could record off the air, and is little more than an ad for Mobil and PBS.B0002XVRGG50A2ZWTFZRNQW7D5A2ZWTFZRNQW7D5Jeremy Storly02008-10-26Mood is the Strong Point in Jarrold's 'Expectations'Julian Jarrold's adaptation shines not because of its faithfulness to the plot of the novel, but because of its effective use of character and mood. Both Abel Magwitch and Miss Havisham appear as ominous figures, much more so than in any other attempt to put Dickens' classic novel to film. Ioan Gruffuld's Pip, likewise, is more frightened as a child, more vulnerable as an adult, than we have ever seen him before. Estella is crueler and more beautiful. The mood throughout, from Pip's strange encounter in the graveyard, to his peculiar encounter with Orlick, to his final encounter with Estella, is often more grim, never more comic than the Dickens. A cloud seems to hang over everything, even its brightest comic moments, offered up in the movie by Wemmick and Herbert.

Often, what works well in a novel does not work well on screen. Jarrold understands this, and presents Dickens' characters as real human beings, establishes a setting that complements mood, and creates a version of 'Great Expectations' that is, in my opinion, one of the best every made.B0002XVRGG32A24464RULWEUE0A24464RULWEUE0Leof22008-06-14My expectations were groundlessI bought this DVD to see a very true interpretation of my favorite Dickens' novel. The movie itself is special and makes the wonderful mood. But this DVD contains the advertising - the big emblem which appeares every 15 minutes in the right bottom corner of your screen. It overlaps the picture and what is worse - you can't dip into the motion. It appeares twelve times all throughout the movie and is always very disturbing. I felt that I spent my money not well, because of this stupid interupting advertising. I was disappointed. But in the rest of things it is a wonderful movie. B0002XVRGG11A1NVIEXCA20W7NA1NVIEXCA20W7NReliable Reviews TooCarmel Valley, CA12007-04-05Mr. Dickens's divorce affected this story.Actress, Justine Waddell, who was great as the sweet and wonderful Molly in "Wives and Daughters", co-stars. Here she plays an attractive woman dealing with a young man infatuated with her. Here her character is not so sweet and not so wonderful. She plays this part effectively as you feel the young man's emptiness. This sub-plot, with more focus, could tell a good moral about the difference between infatuation and true love, but I don't like the whole story this sub-plot is within, and the weird scene with the old lady in her old house. This story needs a contrasting character pursuing deeper love.

The 1981-version has a better first episode; but then drags.
The 1947-version is better, with John Mills, father of Haley Mills.

The book's author, Charles Dickens, married his wife Catherine in 1836. They were together 21-years, and had ten children. During his marriage he wrote his brilliant novels: "Oliver Twist" 1839, "A Christmas Carol" 1843, and "David Copperfield" 1850. Mr. Dickens divorced his wife in 1858. Mr. Dickens wrote the story "Great Expectations" after his divorce in 1861. Divorce affects everyone no matter the circumstances.

Unlike "Great Expectations", Mr. Dickens's great novels have a high-minded thought; balance with moments of cheer, triumph for the main character, adventure, and interesting characters. A novel is not a classic just because it is old and assigned in English class. "Great Expectations" lacks the charm that make his other stories true classics.

Charles Dickens's book "Oliver Twist" is wordy for all but the imaginative and quick reader. "Oliver Twist" DVD's are great for all, because the story has been so polished by so many people. Before TV, before movies, before radio, every town had theatre that performed plays. Every town in England and America performed the play "Oliver Twist". For 90-years until sound movies became common, all these towns kept improving the play "Oliver Twist", until today, on DVD the polished story skips along with great lines. The story "Great Expectations" did not get this polishing in the theatre. "Great Expectations" needs more than polishing. Take the many interesting ideas, drop the dreary, and rewrite the story with more uplifting purpose.

DescriptionIoan Gruffudd, Justine Waddell and Charlotte Rampling star in this adaptation of Charles Dickens' enduring classic Great Expectations, the story of a young orphan named Pip who lives with his sister and her blacksmith husband, Joe.
One day Pip is sent to play at the residence of Miss Havisham, a frightening, elderly woman who seems locked in the past. She wears ancient bridal attire and never moves from the dusty upper rooms of her home. Miss Havisham's beautiful but contemptuous ward, Estella, makes Pip feel appallingly inferior, creating in him a desire to better himself—changing his life forever. But despite his efforts to improve himself, the frustrated Pip seems destined to remain Joe's apprentice. Until one day a lawyer calls to inform Pip that he has "great expectations:" Pip is to be released form his apprenticeship and educated in London as a gentleman! The benefactor who has made this life transformation possible, however, wishes to remain anonymous.Amazon.comThis capable and intelligent adaptation of Charles Dickens's classic novel is one in a long line of Great Expectations put to film. But this two-part drama distinguishes itself with its faithfulness to the book and outstanding performances by the principal cast. Ioan Gruffudd plays the adult Pip, an orphan who lives with his sister and her kindly blacksmith husband. Pip's life changes when he is sent for by Miss Haversham (Charlotte Rampling), an eccentric and wealthy spinster who wears only her bridal gown, which she was wearing when she was left at the altar years before. Introduced to Estella (played later as a woman by Justine Waddell), Miss Haversham's contemptuous ward, Pip falls in love with the girl and spends the remainder of his youth attempting to be good enough for her--a state of affairs that suddenly seems possible when a mysterious benefactor makes Pip's education as a London gentleman possible. Gruffudd is a fine choice for the central character, and his naturally intense expression underscores Pip's problems with insecurity and sense of deservedness. Waddell is an appropriately solipsistic Estella, slightly reminiscent of Vivien Leigh, and Rampling's casting is an unexpected but terrific move on the filmmaker's part. The veteran actress's career-long air of mystery, vague suffering, and intense sexuality bring a potent power to Miss Haversham's baleful looks. Dickens would be proud of this one. --Tom Keogh B00006HAZGDavid CopperfieldB00005N5RHA Tale of Two Cities (Masterpiece Theatre, 1989)B001PU8N0ILittle DorritB00005JOA0The Tenant of Wildfell HallB000LPQ6DEJane Eyre (Masterpiece Theatre, 2006)579586Drama579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video579588General579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video722735011General AAS579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740168Haunted by the Past291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video572118Romance163394Love & Romance163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722753011General AAS163394Love & Romance163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video291309Period Piece163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722754011General AAS291513Television163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video415914General163450Television404276Genres130DVD139452Video595096Miniseries163450Television404276Genres130DVD139452Video537482WGBH Boston251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video426126Gruffudd, Ioan424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video436294McDiarmid, Ian434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video442730Rampling, Charlotte442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video444692Russell, Clive442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video446186Sharp, Lesley444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video453196Woodeson, Nicholas451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video458226Jarrold, Julian458164( J )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355713011Drama355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355715011General355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579524( G )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1265183011Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray Disc Trade-In44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620910111990 - SchwartzColumbia, Missouri USA02009-02-16Fitz is backThis might have been called 'the Return of Cracker', since Fitz has been in Australia for a decade and returns to find a new Manchester. This one is fueled by drug money. The atmospherics are created by a series of quick-cut montages with loud news reports in the background, all of them focusing on war, terrorism and the politicians held responsible for them. In the subsidiary material on the DVD, Robbie Coltrane points out that the writer (Jimmy McGovern) is motivated to write by his personal experience and personal anger. In this case, he's angry about Iraq (and still angry about the work of the IRA in Ulster and beyond). Presumably, he's also angry about what's happened to Manchester and the cause of all of these problems and issues is, in his judgment, the US. This will seem strange to American audiences, for my guess is that the strongest supporters of the war in Iraq do not overlap significantly with the American supporters of the IRA, i.e., those who have supported the IRA with American dollars. They're both American, of course, but the point is that blind blame of the 'USA' lacks nuance, since many Americans do not support the effort in Iraq and many find the actions of the IRA horrific (along with the support of it by American citizens).

This is important to the film since the murderer (superbly played by Anthony Flanagan) has been a soldier in Ulster and is haunted by the memories of his experience there. The problem is that he comes across as a decent, even likeable man whose actions are explainable, if not justified, by his experience. In many ways he carries the film, since he is on screen almost constantly. It is an old rule of narrative that we come to like prominent villains because we have come to know them well. That is certainly the case here, particularly when his victims are unpleasant types who deserve some punishment (if not in the form that they receive). The bottom line is that Fitz is brilliant but unpleasant and irresponsible (as always) and his antagonist in this story has many redeeming features, while the cause of his condition and the blame (totally) laid at the feet of the US seems to lack nuance. The wonderful psychological complexities of both the protagonist and antagonist are undercut by the political screed which constitutes the historical backdrop for the action and atmospherics of the setting. It's worth watching, but--to this viewer--off the mark in its effects on the audience.B000R349H040A31335U0SAOJLHA31335U0SAOJLHJoseph M. It was seen in the United States on BBC America, and released here on DVD in late 2007. The mystery/thriller was written by the veteran Jimmy McGovern, creator of the series, and writer of some of its strongest episodes, and directed by Antonia Bird (The Hamburg Cell.) It stars, as usual, Robbie Coltrane, who since this 1990s TV triumph that first made him famous, has gone on to burnish his name on the bigger screen in Ocean's Twelve; the "Harry Potter" series, and a couple of "James Bond 007s." It is billed as the final episode of "Cracker," though some of us surely hope not.

In this feature-length production, Coltrane reprises his title role as Dr. Edward "Fitz" Fitzgerald, controversial criminologist, abrasive, arrogant and brilliant psychologist. Coltrane dominates the film, of course, with his powerful portrayal of his character. At any rate, Fitz, his long-suffering wife Judith (Barbara Flynn), and their youngest son supposedly have lived as ex-pats in Australia for nearly a decade, while he grapples with his addictions to drink, cigarettes and gambling. They now return to their hometown, Manchester, for the wedding of his daughter. Fitz is, of course, older, fatter, and grayer, and, as a further result of his heavy indulgences, he's looking into Viagra. But he's still capable of rising to the occasion: he can mortify his daughter at her wedding; and get himself involved in helping the local police solve a puzzling murder case.

Fitz finds England much changed in the aftermath of America's horrendous 9/11 terrorist experience; and we are given frequent big bites of TV news shows dealing with American President George Bush, English Prime Minister Tony Blair, and our war in Iraq. Fitz also finds Manchester, a beautiful and interesting city that we don't generally see over here, greatly changed since he left: taxi drivers tell him the changes are due to American, Irish, and drug money: that the city's awash in drugs. The city's also awash in its own accent, that we on these shores would find difficult; happily, the DVD offers unadvertised closed captioning, among its advertised extra features: interviews with Coltrane, Flynn, McGovern, and other cast members, etc.

The murder investigation centers on a handsome, unusually sensitive young local cop, Kenny Archer, played by Anthony Flanagan. He appears to be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of his previous service in the bloody, long-running war in Northern Ireland. And he's come up with a series of interesting theories that blame everything on the U.S. We're responsible for the Northern Ireland war, as we -- mainly our Irish-Americans, of course-- bankrolled it. (And there are a couple of anti-Irish cracks in the film's text, too.) The terrorist attacks of 9/11 are nothing more than the terrorism we sponsored in Northern Ireland come home to haunt us, as well. We're also responsible for Manchester's drug problem, as we then threw the Taliban, the ruling clique of anti-American,Islamic crazies, who were controlling the drug trade, out of Afghanistan. Almost needless to say, finally, we're responsible for the mess in Iraq, and the deaths of British troops there. Did I mention that, beyond its undoubted competence as a mystery/thriller, the film is very anti-American, and will infuriate some possible viewers, who'd best give it a miss?

B000R349H031A2CPM6AEJHVNKLA2CPM6AEJHVNKLFound HighwaysLas Vegas22008-02-22Cracker: But an OLD TerrorExcept for a surprise about a third into the show, this cop story is so predictable that I don't feel guilty about talking in detail about the plot, though I'll try not to spoil anything important. But you've been warned.

This story is ruined by copying American cop show cliches (both in the subject matter of the story and in the TV techniques used to tell it).

There's the extended brutality of a junkie being beaten senseless.

After flashbacks of a killer's memory of dead children lying on a floor, we see our hero climb stairs to where he knows there are children. We see the legs of the children on the floor, motionless, then we see our hero's pained face, then we see the children alive and smiling, watching TV (just like we are at this point). Why the horrified expression on our hero if the kids are all right? It's just a gimmick.

One of the things this story supposedly tries to do is make Americans look bad.

One of the victims is an American who's "sniffing around our women" and who treats the Manchester police like valets (in the American, not the British, sense of the word).

Most of the killer's victims are Americans who show a lack of respect for the British military. (It's a joke about the British in Northern Ireland that triggers the first murder, not anything to do with Bush's war in Iraq or his "lap dog" Tony Blair.)

In fact, the cause of all these murders is Britain's occupation of Belfast, not the U.S. occupation of Iraq.

As it turns out, the Manchester police would have found the killer just as soon even if they hadn't enticed Fitz away from his family.

Of course Fitz confronts the killer and gets him to admit to trying to get the police to kill him because he's afraid to commit suicide. But it looks to me like it's Fitz who's trying to get the killer to kill him, because Fitz can't deal any more with being a drunk and a compulsive gambler who's driven all the people who love him away. (This scene is a cheat, too, making it seem the killer may be granting Fitz his self-destructive wish, but you know he can't be.)

This whole story could have been told if the attacks on September 11 had never happened. I think the producers just wanted to make the story more relevant by tying it to what what Robert Harris in The Ghost: A Novel called "a new Hundred Years War."

Product DescriptionStudio: Acorn Media Release Date: 09/25/2007 Run time: 108 minutes Rating: NrAmazon.comThe brilliant but self-destructive psychologist Dr. Edward "Fitz" Fitzgerald returns for a final, feature-length, and satisfying mystery in Cracker: A New Terror. Having spent a decade in Australia with his wife and youngest son, Fitz (Robbie Coltrane) returns to Manchester, England for his daughter's wedding, instantly demonstrating--by humiliating her at the reception--that he hasn't altered his old, abrasive ways. Despite that, Fitz's family seems finally resigned to his difficult personality and constant boozing, but far less so to his willingness to help the police solve baffling murder cases. Cracker: A New Terror finds Fitz caught up in the investigation of two killings of Americans, a case that points to a Manchester cop (Anthony Flanagan) as a likely suspect. As usual in Cracker adventures, the insightful script by Jimmy McGovern identifies the killer right away for viewers, the better to set up Fitz's psychological challenge in breaking through a killer's resistance. Directed by Antonia Bird (Priest), Cracker: A New Terror portrays Fitz as a man encountering a new, post-9/1l England, afraid of a new breed of terrorism but hardly over the psychological scars of enduring decades of terror inflicted by the Irish Republican Army. Provocative, tense, and inspired, and featuring another remarkable performance by Coltrane in his best role, Cracker: A New Terror is a great way to close out the series. --Tom KeoghB0001ADB50Cracker - The Complete Third SeasonB0000X2EU6Cracker - Series 2B000R349HUPrime Suspect 7 - The Final ActB0000AYJVACracker: Series 1B000S2B21GThe Inspector Lynley Mysteries: Set 515695871Mystery & Suspense579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video579588General579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video722735011General AAS579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722754011General AAS291513Television163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video923878General512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video722787011General AAS541980Crime512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video292287Mystery512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video415914General163450Television404276Genres130DVD139452Video15324461Cracker (UK)357310011C356468011TV Series By Letter163450Television404276Genres130DVD139452Video458226Jarrold, Julian458164( J )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video458322Jones, Simon Cellan458164( J )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video463558Winterbottom, Michael463154( W )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355715011General355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355717011Mystery & Suspense355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1265183011Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray Disc Trade-In44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620920112000 & Newer562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoB0000AYJVAhttp://www.amazon.com/Cracker-1-Ian-Mercer/dp/B0000AYJVA%3FSubscriptionId%3D1DWXK7HJTP76664KT902%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB0000AYJVA21126http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/512WPYZ78KL._SL75_.jpg7556http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/512WPYZ78KL._SL160_.jpg160119http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/512WPYZ78KL.jpg500371http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/512WPYZ78KL._SL30_.jpg3022http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/512WPYZ78KL._SL75_.jpg7556http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/512WPYZ78KL._SL160_.jpg160119http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/512WPYZ78KL.jpg500371Ian MercerAmelia BullmoreRobbie Coltrane1.33:1NR (Not Rated)DVDWarner BrothersMichael WinterbottomJean Stewart (III)Charles McDougallJulian JarroldSimon Cellan Jones9780783119489Box setClosed-captionedColorDVDNTSC0783119488100EnglishOriginal LanguageDolby Digital 2.0 Surround3998USD$39.98Hbo Home VideoHBOD99244D311074070530DVDABIS_DVDHbo Home Video12003-10-14364Hbo Home Video1998-03-07Cracker: Series 10263599244226999USD$69.993687USD$36.8751500004.5225B0000AYJVA40ALSDUU9D26L2CALSDUU9D26L2CP. HaleMissouri02009-03-31CRACKER Series 1I just finished watching the first series of BBC's CRACKER, a detective series featuring a quirky psychologist with plenty of personal problems himself. The first episode, I wasn't sure what I thought of this show but by the 3rd episode I was hooked. The main characters become well known to you, and you begin to wonder "will CRACKER solve his maritial problems, will he succumb to an affair?" "Will the Female Detective be able to compete in her largely male dominated profession?" "Will CRACKER'S son finally be able to adapt to a Real world?" "Will the Lead Detective, a new Dad, take to Fatherhood?" And so on. Plus the story lines of murder and mayham are good too. A different approach than I've seen, but an entertaining series. Definitely adult fare without being overly explicit or just throwing in sex or violence that don't quite fit the storyline. B0000AYJVA50A1QA7J45C46H67A1QA7J45C46H67Roberta L. Kirk02009-03-26cracker: series 1I loved this series and highly recommend it and all of the cracker series. Fitz is so witty and charming and you'll wish the story never ends. I love Robbie Coltrane.B0000AYJVA50A1MU6C107VLAQNA1MU6C107VLAQNTarot-TarotDerry, NH USA02008-05-25Cracking cases and expectations"Fitz," played by Robbie Coltrane, is a very interesting and engaging character. He's an amazing criminal psychologist and often more right about a case, profile, and motives than others might accept, but his own life is a mess. If you enjoy police drama that's a bit different and actually explains why crimials do what they do, then Cracker is for you.

I'd been curious about this series ever since I'd heard of it. Additionally, I knew my favotite actor, Christopher Eccleston was in this series as well. I'm in the process of builing a collection all of Christopher Eccleston's recorded performances. I must say, that now that I have both Cracker season 1 and season 2 as well, I'm sorely tempted to get season 3, just to see how the rest of the stories play out. The series is not just about the cases but also about Fitz's life at home and the lives of the Police he works with.B0000AYJVA50A31335U0SAOJLHA31335U0SAOJLHJoseph M. DescriptionHot on the heels of PRIME SUSPECT came Robbie Coltrane's (Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies) outstanding creation of "Fitz," in the PBS series CRACKER. Fitz is an addicted gambler, a heavy drinker, and a brilliant if deeply flawed criminal psychologist. He is, to the working mind of a killer what CSI is to a trace of blood or a single hair. For Fitz, murder is just the beginning. Three stories follow Fitz as he investigates an accused commuter train killer with amnesia, a couple who share love and murder, and the killing of a young boy that shakes a community to its core.Amazon.comThe compelling Cracker is among the more exciting British mystery series from the 1990s, featuring a hero so flawed he's just as likely to end up inside a jail cell as outside chasing bad guys. Robbie Coltrane, perhaps best known for playing Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies, is unconventional psychologist Eddie "Fitz" Fitzgerald, a rotund teacher who exhorts students to look within their dark hearts and who gleefully embraces his own addictions to gambling, booze, and nicotine.
Caught in a downward spiral, Fitz sneers as his debts mount and his wife (Barbara Flynn) leaves him, but he rallies when a favorite student is slashed to death on a train in series debut "The Mad Woman in the Attic." The suspect, a longtime amnesiac, is put through grueling police torments, but Fitz believes in the man's innocence, thus establishing his ambivalent relationship with Detective Chief Inspector Bilborough (Christopher Eccleston) and a quasi-romantic alliance with another detective, Jane "Panhandle" Penhaligon (Geraldine Somerville, also from the Potter films). Michael Winterbottom, now a renowned feature filmmaker (Welcome to Sarajevo), provides admirable direction.
Fitz's interest in obsessive behavior and his talent for spinning out instant psychological profiles makes him invaluable to Bilborough in subsequent episode "To Say I Love You," in which a rage-filled young man and his scheming girlfriend kill a loan shark. Though the story is less interesting than the Cracker pilot, Fitz's slow crawl back to self-respect and resentful cooperation with his estranged wife's therapist are irresistible entertainment. Finally, "One Day a Lemming Will Fly," in which the murder of a 13-year-old boy sparks a lynch-mob mentality among the public, is a strong two-parter that raises some interesting crises for Fitz. Does he belong with his wife and kids or with Panhandle? Is he better at his job when his personal life is a disaster? The provocative final scenes make one hunger to see more of Cracker. --Tom KeoghB0000X2EU6Cracker - Series 2B0001ADB50Cracker - The Complete Third SeasonB000R349H0Cracker: A New TerrorB0000AYJV5Prime Suspect 1B0000X2ET2Prime Suspect 2163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722754011General AAS291513Television163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video923878General512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video722787011General AAS541980Crime512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video292287Mystery512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video415914General163450Television404276Genres130DVD139452Video15324461Cracker (UK)357310011C356468011TV Series By Letter163450Television404276Genres130DVD139452Video1048638All HBO Titles301540HBO251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video15218551HBO Films301540HBO251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video722822011General AAS301540HBO251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418344Coltrane, Robbie416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video599830Drama501230Boxed Sets251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video599844Mystery & Suspense501230Boxed Sets251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video599836Television501230Boxed Sets251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video458226Jarrold, Julian458164( J )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video458322Jones, Simon Cellan458164( J )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video463558Winterbottom, Michael463154( W )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579516( C )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video680904011All Titles680903011The Foreign Movies & TV Sale: DVDs as low as $6.99251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video680906011Boxed Sets680903011The Foreign Movies & TV Sale: DVDs as low as $6.99251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video388395011Boxed Set390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620910111990 - 1999562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671502011Boxed Set603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoRTY7S5FK7R8FMAbsolute Best of Brit TV, Upstairs and Downstairs bothR1L0RSIGHT07QPBritish TV for AmericansR3I8ZY9AVBQSBLMy Favorite TV Shows, Documentaries & Music DVD'sRFFJ57THZC2CHBEST BRITISH CINEMA: CRIME & MYSTERY PBS, BBC, A&E # 1R1QTYW0X57H5DOBest TV Drama on DVD: Part I (1 to 40)R2PKA5V5S17BCZall time favouritesR1MRDH08L0E95Bmy favorite British Tv shows!!!R3SFASJ1C3RRQ2The Best TV ShowsRTV5DGB9BQ0WPMy TV on DVDR12WNQCFN3QT2YSome great TV you may not have seenB000A7DW94http://www.amazon.com/Charles-Dickens-Collection-Copperfield-Expectations/dp/B000A7DW94%3FSubscriptionId%3D1DWXK7HJTP76664KT902%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB000A7DW9453961http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/510K7PR6D8L._SL75_.jpg7556http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/510K7PR6D8L._SL160_.jpg160119http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/510K7PR6D8L.jpg500373http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/510K7PR6D8L._SL30_.jpg3022http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/510K7PR6D8L._SL75_.jpg7556http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/510K7PR6D8L._SL160_.jpg160119http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/510K7PR6D8L.jpg500373Emilia Fox; They were shown a few years ago on PBS' Masterpiece Theatre. Some of the fine actors include Daniel Radcliffe, Sam Smith, Ioan Gruffold, and Charlotte Rampling. They are (for the most part) faithful recreations of the original stories.

A possible good alternative to this item would be the Charles Dickens Collections 1 and 2, which contain more programs, but they are on the double-sided DVD's. Those sets are now greatly reduced in price and contain at least one of the dramas in this set (David Copperfield with Daniel Radcliffe). If you already purchased this set and want more adaptations, the dramas in the larger two sets are available separately. However, this set has excellent quality DVD's with great sound and picture, which may be an advantage since some reviewers of the larger collections found the technology of the programs to be somewhat lacking in quality.

You will have to buy A Christmas Carol separately, but there are many movie versions of it available. The dramas in this set are from Dickens' three most appealing books besides the story of Scrooge.B000A7DW9431A101B5TJQQZYJBA101B5TJQQZYJBRandall W. With the exception of "The Queen" she is so uptight in ALL roles that I must watch her in small doses. This is a good movie, the camera never leaves Mirren's face (shades of Prime Suspect), sets and scenes are lush, but Helen PLEASE, simmer down. I feel your pain, angst, anger, surprise, lust, but ask the cameraman to give other actors a chance to react with the camera on them. Other than my complaints, this is a good evening with Helen (and others).B0002XVRVQ52ACQYIC13JXAOIACQYIC13JXAOIS. BarrettSanta Cruz, CA22008-09-15A mystery par excellenceMasterpiece Theatre - Painted Lady (1997)

I'm a passionate Helen Mirren fan so was excited to see one of my favorite masterpiece Theatre programs come out in DVD.

Painted Lady was created for Helen Mirren, and it's easy to see why. She fits the role as no one else could--of Maggie Sheridan, a down-on-her-luck former rock singer and former addict who was taken in by Sir Charles Stafford (Iain Cuthbertson) and his son Sebastian (Iain Glenn) and now lives in a cottage on his Irish estate.

One night Sir Charles is brutally murdered and a valuable sixteenth-century painting stolen. Convinced the painting holds the secret to Sir Charles' death, Maggie decides to track it down. She travels to London where her sister, an art historian, can possibly help.

It turns out the painting is one of several that have been sent to Sir Charles to mark major events in his life.

To tell more would spoil the plot. Suffice it to say that as Maggie embarks on a dangerous quest to sell the painting in the murky art underworld, Sebastian stumbles on a secret that will have fateful consequences.

This is one of the finest mysteries I've seen. It takes place in Ireland, London and New York. Great film score and stunning photography with a generous dose of art history thrown in. Mirren and Glenn are backed up with a fine cast in Michael Maloney (Oliver), Lesley Manville (Susie) and Franco Nero (Roberto Tassi).

Highly recommended.B0002XVRVQ40A2KUZZ5D0WM7XTA2KUZZ5D0WM7XTFelicity ChristensenBrinnon, WA02008-09-07Helen Mirren does it again!Helen Mirren is on top form with this story, sometimes you can almost imagine Jane Tennison is right there beside her!B0002XVRVQ21A2EC7QA31CFK4VA2EC7QA31CFK4VP. Twenty years after having been known as of of the world's top blues vocalists, Maggie Sheridan is drawn from her now comfortable life as the friend and protege of Sir Charles Stafford and his son Sebastian, when firstly, Charles and then Sebastian are murdered and a mystery concerning the art collection they owned, comes to the fore. Maggie teams up with an Irish policeman to follow the clues leading to the murderer and the reasons for the murder. It's a rather involved story and one to which the viewer needs to pay close attention, but as usual, Helen Mirren does a fine job of portraying this former wild child of the sixties as she unravels the murky stories which emerge.DescriptionHelen Mirren (Prime Suspect, The Clearing) stars in this compelling murder-mystery set amid the murky underworld of illegal art trade.
Maggie Sheridan (Mirren), once one of the most famous blues voices of her generation, lost decades of her life to drinking and hard-living. After a failed suicide attempt, she was taken in by Sir Charles Stafford (Iain Cuthbertson, Antonia and Jane) and his son Sebastian (Iain Glen, Tomb Raider). She has lived quietly on their Irish estate for ten years. But one summer evening, her peaceful life is shattered when Sir Charles is brutally murdered, and a valuable sixteenth century painting is stolen. The painting is one of several disturbing pictures sent to Sir Charles marking the major events in his life.
Maggie is convinced that the stolen painting holds the key to Sir Charles' death and decides to track it down. Meanwhile, Sebastian uncovers a terrible secret, with horrific consequences.B000R349HUPrime Suspect 7 - The Final ActB0000AYJV5Prime Suspect 1B0000X2ET2Prime Suspect 2B0001ADB5UPrime Suspect 5B0001I56LEPrime Suspect 6 - The Last Witness163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722754011General AAS291513Television163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video923878General512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video898350Amateur Sleuths512032By Theme512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video898362Haunted by the Past512032By Theme512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video898380Whodunnit?512032By Theme512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video722787011General AAS541980Crime512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video292287Mystery512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video163411Suspense512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video411884Barnes, Barry411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419520Cuthbertson, Iain416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video421152Douglas, Sam419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video424638Geary, Karl424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video425164Glen, Iain424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video426270Gunn, Peter424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video431470King, Lorelei430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video433574Liebman, Michael432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video435046Maloney, Michael434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video435196Manville, Lesley434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video437558Mirren, Helen434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video439062Nero, Franco438726( N )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video458226Jarrold, Julian458164( J )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579536( M )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620910111990 - 1999562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoRI204AF385VJRMasterpiece Theater Season 26-281OEJOFSYL44Y0Great Mysteries Part 6B0001WTWO2http://www.amazon.com/Touching-Boxed-Death-Amathus-Wants/dp/B0001WTWO2%3FSubscriptionId%3D1DWXK7HJTP76664KT902%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB0001WTWO253936http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51972M0DRGL._SL75_.jpg7553http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51972M0DRGL._SL160_.jpg160114http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51972M0DRGL.jpg475338http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51972M0DRGL._SL30_.jpg3021http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51972M0DRGL._SL75_.jpg7553http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51972M0DRGL._SL160_.jpg160114http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51972M0DRGL.jpg475338Robson Green; Murphycsmtennessee02009-06-22believablethis british crime drama relies more on great acting skills and really good writing, than "special effects/superfluous gore". this series is the thinking man's law and order. each story is two parts long, and not every loose end is conveniently wrapped up by the end of the story. watching the series was like looking through a window into a snippet from real life. people don't always fit into neat boxes. the dialogue and storylines were very believable. this is what i liked about this crime series.B0001WTWO241A1ST9PG26FSN2HA1ST9PG26FSN2HThomas PaulPlainview, NY USA22007-02-23Two out of three4 stars for the program.
1 star for DVD features.

"Touching Evil" is the story of Detective Inspector Dave Creegan (Robson Green) who returns to the Organized and Serial Crime (OSC) Unit after recovering from a bullet wound to the head. Creegan's injury as changed him in unpredictable ways but his boss wants him back because he is a genius at getting into the mind of serial killers. Creegan and his partner, D.I. Susan Taylor (Nicola Walker), investigate the most serious crimes in England including a serial killer of children. The show was originally broadcast on British television in 1997 and was more recently shown in the US on PBS's program, Mystery. USA Network produced their own short-lived version of the show in 2004.

The show is much less violent and more thoughtful than we are used to on American television. It is also very stylish in its way. Using dark sets and odd lighting it creates a strange and uncomfortable mood. Robson Green is excellent in the lead roll. He has intense blue eyes and rugged good looks and makes himself completely believable as the detective who can concentrate on his job while his personal life crumbles. Creegan is a loner forced to work with a partner who can't trust him. The other members of the OSC aren't sure if the Creegan is as sane as the man they once knew.

The first episode deals with Creegan's return to OSC and his investigation of several young boys who have been kidnapped and left in an airtight room to suffocate. The kidnapper has left a broadcast camera so he can watch them die. Creegan and Taylor have to crack the case before it is too late. The second episode deals with a serial killer of hospital patients and realistically deals with Creegan's own demons of having come back from the dead in the ER the night he was shot in the head. The two episodes are excellent and the script and the acting are perfect. The two episodes move along well but also concentrate on developing believable characters.

The third episode was a big disappointment. An attempt to bring cyber-space into a story line, it suffers from being written in 1997 by writers who don't quite understand cyberspace. The killer is completely unbelievable as computer whiz or as a psychological manipulator of teenagers. For example, the police arrive at the college where they suspect the criminals are and demand that all students be given user id and passwords to get into the computer system. Amazingly, the very next day every student has a new computer id. Even the reason for the initial police investigation isn't quite believable as the crime that has been committed is horse mutilation. The character of the killer is completely undeveloped and we never get a chance to discover who he is or why exactly he is committing these crimes. I found this the weakest of the stories.

Throughout the episodes there are dark scenes designed to provide a mood. To some extent this works but sometimes (especially in the last episode) it interferes with the story by being so "in your face". For example, the offices where the detectives work are always dark. I find it hard to believe that someone could read a file or do some paperwork in these offices. An interview room will be a large dark room with a small reflective table in the middle. A single spotlight will shine onto the table and provide reflecting light onto the faces of those around the table. This might be good for cool looking cinematography but it isn't really believable. Another scene in the offices has red light shining through a window onto the face of one of the detectives while the office itself is lit only by one small spotlight. Dust is floating everywhere so light is always tempered by what looks like dust or smoke. This episode feels very badly overstaged.

But that is only one clinker out of three and the others discs are most certainly worth the price of admission. The DVD's themselves are of good quality but have no special features. There is no commentary or interviews. The episodes appear on the DVD exactly as they appeared on the Mystery TV program so each 2 hour episode is broken into two 1 hour programs. This means that at the end of the first hour there are closing credits and then opening credits of Mystery followed by Diana Rigg's introduction which in some cases gives more of the episode away than I would have liked. It would have been much better if they had been edited so that it was possible to watch the episodes without the break.
B0001WTWO254A2HKYQ0EZDHJLRA2HKYQ0EZDHJLREdward A. Screen format: 4 x 3 full frame.Amazon.comThis three-volume set captures a police force totally unlike the ones U.S. television and film audiences regularly see. Gone are the gunshots and widespread violence that afflict characters on NYPD Blue and Homicide. This dark British miniseries has an unflinching focus on the pensive, slightly spooked but always confident Detective Inspector Dave Creegan (Robson Green). Of course the caseload isn't entirely alien to a pop culture audience, weaned as it is on crime novels and American television-style plots. There's an aging geneticist who is possessed by an odd infatuation--apparently not a sexual one--with children, keeping them penned in an all-white room while watching them on a remote video cam, and other deviants just interesting enough to capture extended interest. Touching Evil's pacing is intricately slow, such that evidence gathering can be seen from an inchworm-like perspective (showing tweezers extracting a single hair, for example). Green's role is structured like Fox Mulder and other U.S. television creations. Moody and a bit inscrutable, Creegan comes to the Organized and Serial Crime Unit after a long sabbatical, triggered (no pun, really!) by his getting shot in the head. Rather than give up police work after meeting with the bullet, however, he recommits to the job, treating cases as if they're his personal obsession. And they are. Creegan violates all the conventions his American TV-cop counterparts break in their unbridled passion to solve crimes, but he does it with unforced and unhurried relish. The plots in each of these episodes are singular, allowing the story lines to develop like good mysteries, even driving the viewer to suspect that Creegan's passions are leading him waywardly away from the cases. Shot with mostly stoic camera angles, the show's energy changes significantly when Creegan's heart begins to pound, the camera catches in halted visuals, and the drama builds and builds until, well, until it avoids resolution time and again, much to the viewer's delight. --Andrew BartlettB0002XVRXYTouching Evil 2B00009QGAUTouching Evil 3B000YRY8BGState of Play (BBC Miniseries)B0002TSZQAMe & Mrs. JonesB0001WTUKIReckless163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video923878General512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video292287Mystery512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video163411Suspense512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video163413Thrillers512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video415914General163450Television404276Genres130DVD139452Video15833371Touching Evil357327011T356468011TV Series By Letter163450Television404276Genres130DVD139452Video537482WGBH Boston251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video425814Green, Robson424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video436294McDiarmid, Ian434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video599830Drama501230Boxed Sets251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video599844Mystery & Suspense501230Boxed Sets251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video599836Television501230Boxed Sets251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video458226Jarrold, Julian458164( J )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579550( T )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390120011Full Screen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video388395011Boxed Set390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620910111990 - 1999562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671502011Boxed Set603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR1L0RSIGHT07QPBritish TV for AmericansRBC4WNXGGETV7Everybody's Got A Little British In ThemR312Y4C4PPNE90Great UK and Irish FilmsR20LZGO0MPMAXSwaste some time! watch some DVD'sV0DACD19NC3MStill Preparing for Doctor Who 2005AD74J4VIQB3VBritish Television Shows on DVD2W678Z5U60V0Xdvds to be released- mostly tv shows (part four)3ME3CEQ7FVXBTIf You Liked THE X FILES, Try ...3HF7X5KXQNHTTThe Ultimate in TV Mystery SeriesB000A7DW8Uhttp://www.amazon.com/Masterpiece-Theatre-All-Kings-Men/dp/B000A7DW8U%3FSubscriptionId%3D1DWXK7HJTP76664KT902%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB000A7DW8U49284http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51SD87TRETL._SL75_.jpg7553http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51SD87TRETL._SL160_.jpg160113http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51SD87TRETL.jpg500353http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51SD87TRETL._SL30_.jpg3021http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51SD87TRETL._SL75_.jpg7553http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51SD87TRETL._SL160_.jpg160113http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51SD87TRETL.jpg500353David Jason; Maggie Smith; William Ash; Sonya Walger; Stuart Bunce; James Murray (XIII); Ed Waters (II); Tom Burke (IV); Ben Crompton; Eamon Boland; Jo Stone-Fewings; James Hillier (II); David Troughton; Emma Cunniffe; Adam Kotz; Patrick Malahide; Gaye Brown; Phyllis Logan; Ian McDiarmid; Danny Worters1.33:1UnratedDVDJulian Jarrold9781593755201Closed-captionedColorDVDNTSC1593755201EnglishOriginal Language1995USD$19.95WGBH BOSTONWGBD33659D12000-02-205871018542DVDABIS_DVDWGBH BOSTON12005-11-01120WGBH BOSTON2000-02-20Masterpiece Theatre: All the King's Men7834213365991028USD$10.281162USD$11.623470011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DER0.00NewnewxoAn7wVl0Eb8JacNawTCcDodF%2BK9nNFJqZLj4vnKOrHiitTmuK6UumJFivH9lPR3ZucrkuZxuEvAnrWCZdKFNa0%2B4Cn14b2P1499USD$14.99496USD$4.9625Usually ships in 24 hoursnow00-114.0113B000A7DW8U40A2I6MGMBRBWRHSA2I6MGMBRBWRHSJames P. Maggie Smith is quite good in her role, and adds humour to it as well. The other cast members are excellent, with direction and writing at tops.
A must if you enjoy Masterpiece Theater.DescriptionThe true story of England's vanished regiment is revealed. It is one of the most compelling and curious legends of the First World War. Led by Captain Frank Beck (David Jason), a favorite agent of King George V (David Troughton, Madame Bovary), Sandringham Company was comprised entirely of servants, grooms and gardeners from the King's Norfolk Estate. On August 12, 1915 the unit marched into battle against the Turks in Gallipoli and simply vanished, never to be heard from again. Queen Alexandra, played by Dame Maggie Smith (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, A Room with a View), was the driving force behind the investigation into the real fate of the battalion. But despite her extensive inquires, no trace of the men was ever discovered. Now, All the King's Men brings the details of what really happened in 1915 to the screen for the first time. It tells the story of these amateur soldiers, the idyllic life and loves they left behind in the quintessential English country estate and the horrors of an ill-prepared campaign to which they were subjected.Amazon.comIn 1915, during World War I, a doomed campaign was fought by the Allies against German-affiliated Turkish forces in the Dardanelles. (This devastating conflict was also the inspiration for the 1981 Australian film Gallipoli.) The Fifth Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment, composed wholly of servants, grooms, and gardeners from King George V's estate at Sandringham, was sent into the fray and, legend has it, vanished without a trace into a mysterious mist. This deeply affecting Masterpiece Theatre production, All the King's Men, tells the horrifying true story of what really happened to these men. From paradise on an English country estate, we follow them into the chaotic hell of war on blistering foreign shores. The pathos of the innocence and optimism of these boys, some as young as 14, as they march off to battle is tremendous. Before shipping out, Sergeant Ted Grimes (William Ash) celebrates a joyous wedding to his childhood sweetheart, plucky Peggy Batterbee (Emma Cunniffe), assuring her of his swift return. Gallant Captain Frank Beck (David Jason) has trained his boys well in the principles of loyalty and duty. Tragically, they soon learn that these niceties are worse than useless during wartime. Performances by a large ensemble cast are superb in this engrossing TV film. Dame Maggie Smith is a standout, exuding marvelous warmth and wisdom as the Queen Mother Alexandra, who mounts an extensive inquiry to determine the real fate of her beloved lads. --Laura MirskyB0011FDVGIMy Boy JackB00008J2PFBehind the LinesB00005U8F4The Lost BattalionB000P7V4MGCompany KB001HCWGUWCaptains and the Kings579588General579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video722735011General AAS579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722754011General AAS291513Television163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video643789011History643785011Social Studies290738Educational404276Genres130DVD139452Video909834Great Battles909814By Theme586156Military & War404276Genres130DVD139452Video909842Military Life909814By Theme586156Military & War404276Genres130DVD139452Video291342Drama586156Military & War404276Genres130DVD139452Video415914General163450Television404276Genres130DVD139452Video537482WGBH Boston251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video429684Jason, David429340( J )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video433938Logan, Phyllis432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video434964Malahide, Patrick434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video436294McDiarmid, Ian434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video447158Smith, Maggie444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video450116Troughton, David448792( T )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video458226Jarrold, Julian458164( J )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355715011General355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579536( M )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620920112000 & Newer562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR2MDP65VAZ05FGHistory on Film: World War I (1914-1918)R2LOW9RF74KAABWorld War One On FilmR2JCCDMISV90XUMasterpiece Theater Season 29-31R2T2LFDORYYR8TRelive the British EmpireR1S6J7X5HEG6RBWWI Movie SelectionR3P6UR83ZMH54MGreat Period Movies ~ Masterpiece Theatre Edition
