Check out the latest Bobby J. Copeland book on "Bill Elliott:The Peaceable Man" is chuck full of answers to all the questions his fans had from early on...plenty of thrills, adventure and loaded with action. My personal favorites were the "Red Ryder Series" or "The Great Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok" an ongoing character that would appear in many films to come...as Hickok and Wild Bill Saunders. Elliott was a natural for the western, his riding abilities and fight scenes were the caliber of Buck Jones, Johnny Mack Brown and Bob Steele...good reading for all you wranglers out there...I found myself being transported back in time, Mr. Copeland's book has opened my eyes to what a wonderful unselfish person Bill Elliott was...only wish I could have met him. He was one of a kind...a peaceable man!...published by Empire Publising and available on Amazon and Empire Publications Inc.
Red Ryder was a popular American fictional cowboy created by Stephen Slesinger and drawn by artist Fred Harman ... the artist had created the Western adventure comic strip Bronc Peeler in 1933, and the central character, Bronc Peeler, evolved over five years, eventually getting a name change to Red Ryder ... beginning Sunday, November 6. 1938, Red Ryder was syndicated by NEA, expanding over the following decade to 750 newspapers with a readership of 14 million ... endless parade of comic books, Big Little Books, novels, serial chapters, radio programs and products ... astride his mighty steed Thunder, Red was a tough cowpoke who lived in Painted Valley with his aunt, the Duchess, and his sidekick, Buckskin Blodgett. Little Beaver rode his horse, Papoose, when they took off to deal with the bad guys ... and VCI Home Video has released all of this on the wonderful Red Ryder B-Western Series ... gotta love it.

Oravitz12008-03-09GENE'S FIRST AND ONE OF HIS BEST!!!After guest starring in Ken Maynard's feature IN OLD SANTA FE (1934) and serial MYSTERY MOUNTAIN (1934) Gene was given the chance to star in Mascot's THE PHANTOM EMPIRE (1935) when the studio cut ties with the troublesome Maynard. And even though he sang a few songs as an entertainer in IN OLD SANTA FE and the setting for that film was a contemporary Dude Ranch, it's THE PHANTOM EMPIRE that really set up the AUTRY-STYLE as Gene hosts a radio show broadcast live from his own radio/guest/dude ranch mixing his action feats with popular Western tunes. Truly a milestone in B-Western history!
TUMBLING TUMBLEWEEDS (1935) for the newly formed REPUBLIC PICTURES is Gene's first starring feature, and what a doozie it is, ranking as one of Gene's all time best, and rightfully so.
Lazy and seemingly idle Gene just likes to sit around and sing while his father has to battle intruding nesters. But Gene is really on the ball and sticks up for the nesters only to quarrel with his father and be banished from the homestead. Gene joins a medicine show and returns five years later only to learn that his best friend has been blamed for the recent murder of his father...Gene and Smiley Burnette sort things out with the help of a pre-Gabby George Hayes.
This is a GREAT REPUBLIC WESTERN skillfully directed by Joe Kane. The camera set-ups are outstanding, the photography crisp and inventive. It seems so modern for the 1930's. Few films today are so creatively made. Truly a joy to watch!
And the IMAGE dvd from the GENE AUTRY COLLECTION is as noted on the cover: FULLY RESTORED! It looks as though it had been released yesterday! I really felt as though I were present in the theater in 1935 watching this gem.
...Just a side note here in that I want to mention B-WESTERN vetern Jack Rockwell's outstanding performance as McWade. Rockwell played in countless B-WESTERNS during his long career, often as a henchmen but also on the side of the law as well, and this is one of his better outings, if only a personal favorite of mine...
All said, a fantastic start for Gene Autry on to a career that would make him perhaps the greatest Western film star of all time.
SUPER HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!B000G8NXSW50A3PD6WWOPKPLJ9A3PD6WWOPKPLJ9Wayne EngleMadison, IN United States02007-09-12A great start for the Singing Cowboy! This was Gene Autry's first feature-length starring movie, and his acting is just a little stilted in a few places. But overall, he takes charge of this classic tale of ranchers vs. nesters just like the pro he quickly became. His scenes with the two lovely young women are especially relaxed and natural.
Autry looks as young and fresh as a daisy in "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," although he's still got a little baby fat on him that had pretty much disappeared by his movies made in early 1937. It's funny how if you watch his early movies in chronological order, you can see him gradually slim down at the same time his wardrobe sharpens up and his horsemanship on Champ goes from passably adequate to effortlessly expert.
Gene's singing wasn't quite yet what it became later, but nevertheless there's nothing wrong with his pipes as he sings three western classics during the movie: the title song; "Riding Down the Canyon;" and the song for which he won the first-ever gold record: "That Silver-Haired Daddy of Mine."
As the other reviewer mentioned, George Hayes, not yet Gabby, shows his versatility in this flick as the pompous, phony-dignified medicine show "doctor." Smiley Burnette gives samples of the humor and tunes he'll offer in future Autry movies.
This is an expert blend -- just the right proportions of drama, comedy, music and action. The first singing cowboy movie was a great start to a great genre. It's well worth watching.
Under Joseph Kane (Director), Nat Levine (Producer), Ford I. Beebe (Screenwriter), Alan Ludwig (Short Story Author), Ernest W. Miller (Cinematographer) --- released September 5,1935 --- This is Gene Autry's first picture for Republic, and also the first directing job at Republic for long-time Autry and Roy Rogers director, Joseph Kane --- Gene solves the murder of his father, rights the wrongs attributed to his old friend, and gets both the horse and the girl - all in just over one hour --- The substance of the dispute is over water rights: a very real part of the history of the American West --- the singing cowboy returning home after a five-year absence to find his father murdered and his old pal charged with the crime --- Gene is sure he's innocent, so he teams with sidekick Smiley Burnette to find the real killer --- The supporting cast is very good, however, including a beardless George pre-"Gabby" Hayes (he does sport a walrus moustache, however) as the leader of the medicine show: "Where's the nearest waterhole so I can mix up a batch of dope?" he asks --- Hayes is a delight in a characterization far removed from his more familiar screen persona, though little glimmers of "Gabby" are visible --- plus Gene, Smiley and the Sons of the Pioneers (the screen debut of Leonard Slye, soon to become Roy Rogers) perform Bob Nolan's title tune "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" along with "That Silver-Haired Daddy of Mine," "Ridin' Down the Canyon," and "Corn Fed and Rusty," composed and performed by Smiley Burnette.
Special footnote, Orvon Gene Autry was an American performer who gained fame as The Singing Cowboy on the radio, in movies and on television --- Discovered by film producer Nat Levine in 1934, he and Burnette made their film debut for Mascot Pictures Corp. "In Old Santa Fe" as part of a singing cowboy quartet; he was then given the starring role by Levine in 1935 in the 12-part serial "The Phantom Empire" --- Shortly thereafter, Mascot was absorbed by the formation of Republic Pictures Corp. and Autry went along to make a further 44 films up to 1940, all B westerns in which he played under his own name, rode his horse Champion, had Burnette as his regular sidekick and had many opportunities to sing in each film --- Autry became the top Western star at the box-office by 1937, reaching his national peak of popularity from 1940 to 1942. His Gene Autry Flying "A" Ranch Rodeo show debuted in 1940 --- Gene Autry is the only celebrity to have five stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one in each of the five categories maintained by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce --- Radio, Films, Recordings, Television and Live Theater.

2. Smiley Burnette
Date of Birth: 18 March 1911 - Summum, Illinois
Date of Death: 16 February 1967 - Encino, California

Second special footnote, Lester Alvin (Smiley) Burnette an American singer-songwriter who could play as many as 100 different musical instruments, was a successful comedy actor in Western films over three decades --- The popularity of Burnette's Frog Millhouse character, with his trademark floppy black hat, was such that when Autry left for World War II service he did sidekicks duties with Eddie Dew, Sunset Carson and Bob Livingston, plus nine other films with Roy Rogers. After leaving Republic Pictures in 1944, Burnette became the sidekick to Charles Starrett at Columbia Pictures in the long Durango Kid series. Starrett starred in the series from 1944 until 1952, and that pairing resulted in more than 50 films. After the Starrett series was over, Burnette joined Autry for his final six films, all released by Columbia Pictures in 1953.

Not even close. It has 1935 automobiles, a villain whose name begins with Z, a secret weapon that would change warfare, a bubbling laboratory, and a horse, Tony, that can out-lassie Lassie when it comes to seeking help and communicating. But most of all it has a great cowboy, Tom Mix, who was a fine rodeo and circus rider, doing his own stunts. He certainly could ride and was especially creative in getting on a horse. Once he even jumps out a window, and Tony is right there, situated perfectly, saddled and waiting.

The story doesn't really matter, now, does it? It's Tom Mix without the Ralston ads, and that's just about enough. He was supposedly John Wayne's mentor and severest critic. He could certainly outdo The Duke when it came to horsemanship.

It's crude. The story is predictable. But it's still great fun.B00008G96O55A2A7NHE5HTK79NA2A7NHE5HTK79NJ. LovinsMr. JimMissouri-USA62005-09-15"first serial and final film of our legendary hero ~ Tom Mix"VCI Entertainment, Mascot Pictures and Nat Levine present "The Miracle Rider" (1935) (Dolby Digitally Remastered), 15 Chapters of vintage serial loaded with plenty of action, fist fights and hard riding... Tom Mix joins the Texas Rangers, can he avenge his father's death and help the Ravenhead Indians...what is X-94 and does Zaroff plan to rule the world with his secret weapon...will the use of the "Firebird" scare the Indians off the reservation...there is a great deal of entertainment here for the cliffhanger fans out there...you have to love the serial format when viewed over time in single or double chapter installments there is nothing better.
Under director's Armand Schaefer and B. Reeves Eason with screenplay by Gerald Geraghty and Maurice Geraghty...the cast include Tom Mix (Tom Morgan), Joan Gale (Ruth), Charles Middleton (was Ming in the Flash Gordon series) (Zaroff), Niles Welch (Metzger), Edward Hearn (Emil Janns), Bob Kortman (Longboat), Charles King (Hatton - Henchman), George Chesebro (Crossman - Henchman), Tom London (Sewell - Henchman), Edmund Cobb (Vining - Henchman) and Edward Earle (Christopher Adams, Indian Agent)...another great serial provided by Mascot Pictures during their heyday in the early '30s... Tom Mix and his horse, Tony Jr make the perfect pair in this exiciting serial as he uses his rope as much as his gun in a few of the episodes...Charles Middleton was the perfect nasty cold blooded leader of this Mascot serial...any B-Western with Charles King as the heavy has to be good just because it has Charles King in it.. King plays the henchman Hatton on Zaroff's payroll...for once he didn't play the character they call "Blackie".
Tom Mix birth name was Thomas Hezikiah Mix...birth date was January 6, 1880 in Mix Run, Pa and left us Oct 12, 1940 in Florence, Arizona..."The Miracle Rider" is a top-notch serial inclusive of everything you would expect from our hero and legendary Tom Mix...this was Tom Mix farewell film performance...he retired from the screen and died in a car accident four and half years later.

TwiddleCuthySacramento, CA USA82005-07-30Very good serial and from a nice print too!I've never been a big fan of the Mascot serials but this one is a good one! Tom Mix is past his prime but still fun to watch (along with his horse Tony of course!). Fine supporting cast headed by Joan Gale as the Indian heroine, Charles Middleton (the perfect villain for any serial!), Robert Frazer, Niles Welch and Jason Robards, Sr. 15 action packed chapters on 2 discs plus some bonus serial trailers. VCI's source material appears to be a fine grain 16mm print and it's very good. Highly recommended for serial or western fans!B00008G96O45AHUT55E980RDRAHUT55E980RDRNeal C. ReynoldsIndianapolis, Indiana52003-01-03Worthwhile just to enjoy seeing the legendary Tom MixTom Mix is probably the best known of the early western heroes. Besides his roles, he's also credited for being an early mentor for a hopeful young actor by the name of John Wayne.
This Mascot serial was made at the end of Tom Mix's career. He was one who suffered from the advent of sound.
One interesting facet of the serial is its foreshadowing of events in Europe. The bad guy is mining a powerful explosive for an unnamed European country which is preparing for war. I don't think I'm spoiling the ending by letting you know that Tom Mix, aided by his horse Tony, successfully thwarts the scheme by the final chapter.
Quite recommended for those who enjoy vintage western action.B00008G96O514AHUT55E980RDRAHUT55E980RDRNeal C. ReynoldsIndianapolis, Indiana142002-08-06TOM MIX'S ONLY SERIAL AND HIS LAST MOVIEOne reviewer must've gotten the wrong video, because this is definitely Tom Mix, and Rin Tin Tin is nowhere to be seen in it! Besides Tom Mix, you get Charles Middleton as the villian. He's not nearly as menacing as he is in the Flash Gordon serials, but he's still a notable villian.
This is truly a contemporary western, taking place in 1935 when the movie was made. The bad guy is bent on chasing the indian tribe off their reservation so he can mine it for a secret explosive that he plans to sell to an unnamed European country. In one scene, he mentions the added power this powerful explosive would give a dictator, so if you know enough history to know what was happening in Europe in 1935, you can guess what country was being suggested here.
Tom Mix and Middleton together make this one of the better western serials, and I quite recommend it.Product DescriptionStudio: Video Communications Inc. CUSTER'S LAST STAND was the first of these.

Outdoor scenes for LAST STAND were filmed at Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park (Agua Dulce, CA. - a far cry and distance from South Dakota). Unlike most serials, LAST STAND has several lead characters and storylines that unfold during its 15 episodes. The central theme here (if there is one) is a red herring: the search for an arrow containing directions to a mineral-rich cave-- a cave that we never see. Along the way we do meet some of the Old West's more renowned characters. The topper of course is the 7th Cavalry's ill-fated battle of Little Big Horn.
LAST STAND trivia:

George Custer was a brevetted brigadier general during the Civil War-- a temporary position. When the Union Army was reduced in size after the war, Custer was also reduced to a lieutenant colonel, the rank he held at the time of his death 13 years later.

Sixty-two actors appeared in LAST STAND (23 were uncredited). The cast was packed with Native Americans such as: White Feather, Tall Tree, Swift Eagle, Red Star, Lone Pine, Little Eagle, Humming Bird, etc.

One man listed as (and believed to be) an Indian was Iron Eyes Cody (Chief Brown Fox). Cody was actually the son of Italian immigrant parents. He denied this even in court in 1996, when his heritage was challenged. Cody's most famous role was his briefest: he was the Indian who sheds a tear for a blighted American environment in "Keep America Beautiful" ads that ran from 1971 into the 1980s.

Young Marty Joyce (Buzz/town fool) was killed in a car wreck shortly after this film was completed.

Stuntman-extraordinaire Yakima Canutt starred in a few silent-era westerns. He was also at times an assistant director, production coordinator, writer and stunt coordinator on dozens of great films. Here, Canutt has a minor role as an Indian.

Robert Walker was a silent screen star whose career deteriorated in the sound era to playing uncredited bit parts-- he did so for a quarter century.

Chief Thundercloud was of Cherokee/Scotch/Irish/German heritage. The title of "Chief" was honorary. Thundercloud created the role of Tonto in two late-1930s LONE RANGER serials. He also was the title character in GERONIMO (1939).

Chief John Big Tree's likeness appears on the Indian head nickel. He was a full-blooded Seneca Indian. (Big Tree portrays a medicine man here.)

Five out of the six shorts on this disc feature Shemp Howard as the third Stooge, and for those of you who do not like Shemp, I would suggest that you PLEASE give him another chance; he was a damn good comedian!

One of my personal favorite Three Stooges films, included on this disc, is "Punchy Cowpunchers" (1950), a hilarious comedy Western directed by the capable Edward Bernds and featuring a great music score and the fine acting talents of such wonderful supporting players as Jock Mahoney, Vernon Dent, Christine McIntyre, Emil Sitka, Dick Wessel, and Kenneth MacDonald. "Dopey Dicks" (1950) is a superlative detective film which features McIntyre, Philip Van Zandt, and Stanley Price within a spooky haunted house story. "Vagabond Loafers" (1949) is a hilarious plumbing episode, a remake of "A Plumbing We Will Go" (1940). "Out West" (1947) and "Merry Mavericks" (1951) are two more fast-paced Westerns, and "Cactus Makes Perfect" (1942), the only short on this disc to feature Curly Howard as the third Stooge, is another fine gold-digging short that takes place way out west! Enjoy the disc!B00005B1W831ADI65VATAI5STADI65VATAI5STBrenda Wadsworth12006-11-07The Three Stooges Merry MavericksThis stooges DVD is not the best out there but if you are a huge Shemp fan then this is the DVD for you. There are not a lot of stooge DVD's that have Shemp in them but Merry Mavericks is all Shemp except for Cactus Makes Perfect. Here is my rating for each episode:

1. Cactus Makes Perfect- Moe, Larry, & Curly: A good short probably the best one on the DVD. 4/5 stars

2. Out West- Moe, Larry, & Shemp: I am not a huge fan of westerns especially if my favorite comedy duo is in them. I found this short to be awful. In my opinion all the the western shorts the stooges made except a couple are awful. 2/5 stars

3. Vagabond Loafers- Moe, Larry, & Shemp: This one was good even though it is sort of a remake of the famous Curly short A Plumbing We Will Go, it still was decent although Shemp redoing Curly's role was awful and there are not too many stooge shorts with Shemp in them that are awful but his part in this one was terrible. 3/5 stars

4. Dopey Dicks- Moe, Larry, & Shemp: This one in my opinion is the second best Shemp stooge short right behind The Brideless Groom. Dopey Dicks is another stooge spook episode and is really funny. 5/5 stars

5. Punchy Cowpunchers- Moe, Larry, & Shemp: This one was just awful I did not crack a smile at all when I watched it. 1/5 stars

6. Merry Mavericks: Moe, Larry, & Shemp: This one was a remake of Phony Express and it was ok but not as good as when Curly did Phony Express. 3/5 stars

All and all this one is not the best Three Stooges DVD out there but like I said if you are a Shemp fan then this one is worth the money. B00005B1W831A62G4QX6XQVLPA62G4QX6XQVLPAnyechkaRensselaer, NY United States12006-08-17Not that greatThis may quite possibly be the weakest DVD in this series, even including the colorised DVDs. There are a few great shorts here, but most of them are pretty dull and unmemorable. The title short in particular is just awful. The boys did some Westerns that were pretty good, but more often than not they just didn't seem believable, let alone even funny, as slow-witted dopey cowboys. This is not high-calibre material being represented.

The shorts themselves:

'Cactus Makes Perfect' (1942) is perhaps a bit above average, though it's not that memorable or great. At least they're not playing dopey cowboys in this one, even though it does take place out West, but it's still pretty slow-paced. The opening scene is great, but it gets really slow-paced after they go West to try out Curly's useless invention, a machine that finds gold buttons when an arrow is launched.

'Vagabond Loafers' (1949) is one of the few great shorts on here. It's largely a remake of the 1940 classic 'A-Plumbing We Will Go,' though it's not a complete remake. The plot is somewhat different in that the boys are actually plumbers and not just pretending to be plumbers to evade the police. There's also the subplot of Mr. and Mrs. Allen (Christine McIntyre and Kenneth MacDonald) stealing the old valuable painting at the mansion of Mr. and Mrs. Norfleet (Symona Boniface and Emil Sitka). Actually, there's far more of a plot to this one than there was in the original, though I do personally prefer the original. However, even though it's at least used pretty sparsely here as compared to what would start happening more and more just a few years down the road, there is some stock footage here of the original. Most of it is Dudley Dickerson's scene in the kitchen, where all of the appliances suddenly start shooting out water, but the other reused footage isn't really consistent with the new footage. If we're supposed to believe that this short is taking place at night, then why are the scenes of Larry searching for the shutoff valve taking place in broad daylight?

'Dopey Dicks' (1950) is widely regarded as one of the best Shemp shorts, and while I personally don't hugely care for the mystery/detective genre, I can recognise and appreciate how great it is. The premise is kind of a reworking of 'A Bird in the Head' (1946), though this is obviously the better and stronger short (not least because this time the third Stooge was healthy and in top form instead of looking and acting really sickly). It also has a real film noir feel to it, both in the plot and in the great lighting and shadows. And since this short is one of the "Missing 60," it's great to see it finally released instead of sitting away unseen with a bunch of other great shorts.

'Out West' (1947) is somewhat above average, and possibly their best Western of the Shemp era. Though it does have that same slow-paced feel to it and the unrealistic portrayal of our heroes as dopey cowboys, it does have more funny moments than usual in these Westerns. It's also hard to tell if this is meant as a parody of Westerns or is supposed to be an actual Western itself, since it has elements that would suggest both scenarios. And since this was only the second short made after Shemp rejoined the team, he still hadn't perfected his character yet. It's plain to see how well he fit back in after so many years away, but he still needed a little time to work on his new screen character, and this was after all still a time when everyone thought he was only going to be doing this temporarily instead of for the rest of his life.

'Punchy Cowpunchers' (1950) is pretty dull, though it does have some moments. It's easily one of the worst of the Shemp era. Once more there's a slow pace and a sense of disbelief at how the boys are supposed to be stupid slow-witted cowpokes. Yes, in their non-Western shorts, they do act pretty stupid, but when it all boils down, observant viewers know that it's just an act, that they're actually smarter and wittier than a lot of the people around them. Extremely unmemorable.

'Merry Mavericks' (1951) may very possibly be the absolute worst Shemp short, or at least the absolute worst original short. (Remakes consisting of like 90% stock footage and a few minutes of new material, usually very inconsistent with the old material, like 'Fling in the Ring' and 'Flagpole Jitters,' are in their own category of terribleness.) Completely boring and unfunny, very unmemorable, hokey, slow-paced, you name it. It's also a remake of 'Phony Express' (1943), which wasn't so great either, but at least wasn't as awful as this. Marion Martin as Gladys is also a poor substitute for the beautiful talented Christine McIntyre, and Don Harvey is similarly a poor substitute for Kenneth MacDonald. It's also quite possibly the worst short directed by the usually great Ed Bernds (at least his weak shorts from 1946 can be excused given Curly's poor health). There are almost no words to describe just how dreadful this short is, though I suppose it is better than the four shorts where we're supposed to make believe that the back of Joe Palma's head is really Shemp.

Overall, this isn't a very good collection of shorts. It's very telling that the two best shorts have nothing to do with the Old West theme (though it's certainly far from the only disc where not all of the shorts match the supposed "theme"). The Stooges just seem more funny, realistic, and believable as city boys, working as exterminators, detectives, garbage men, gas station attendants, salesmen, that sort of thing, not stupid slow-witted cowboys. And though I don't really care for that many of their Westerns anyway, at least the Curly era ones had better scripts. As great as it is to see more of the Shemp shorts on DVD, one wishes that better ones had been selected in lieu of dull dreadful entries like 'Merry Mavericks' and 'Punchy Cowpunchers.' B00005B1W852A1IKOYZVFHO1XPA1IKOYZVFHO1XPandy8047Nokomis,Florida22004-05-21The four StoogesI say "the four Stooges" because this collection features Moe,Larry,Curly and Shemp. CACTUS MAKES PERFECT,the only short with Curly,is where the Stooges hunt for gold with their new invention,a "goldfinder",which is more like a standard metal dectector. In OUT WEST,the Stooges go out west primarily for the sake of Shemp's unhealthy leg. In PUNCHY COWPUNCHERS,the Stooges are sent to the Panhandle country to capture the Killer Dillons. In MERRY MAVERICKS,the Stooges are wanted for vagrancy just like in an earlier film with Curly,PHONY EXPRESS. In VAGABOND LOAFERS,a remake of another Curly short,A-PLUMBING WE WILL GO,the Stooges as plumbers wreck havoc, and during a couple's party. In DOPEY DICKS,the Stooges as private eyes, rescue a kidnapped beauty from a labrotory. Great support from Christine McIntyre who appeared in OW,VL,DD and PC. Curly was still alive, but terminally ill when his brother Shemp's shorts were made.B00005B1W842A32OSPI06T9I6LA32OSPI06T9I6LLoren S. Shevitza cappella enthusiastChicago, IL United States22002-06-21finally, some hint that's it's a DVD!They finally did something nice for the DVD opening. There's a short series with still photos and sound effects that shows the boys "in action". They still should put many more shorts on one DVD, though. The ones that did make it are funny, of course. Shemp is a very underrated member of the team.Product Description
Include six shorts, including:

Cactus Makes Perfect (1942): When Curly's invention - a gold finder - is deemed "incomprehensible and utterly impractical," the Stooges think it means they're sitting on a gold mine, and go west to find one and rake in their fortunes.

Out West (1947): The Stooges get a leg up on some bad dudes when they head west for a therapeutic vacation to heal the bad win in Shemp's leg. But when they mosey into a saloon, they stumble into the middle of a love triangle between a dirty dealer, a saloon waitress and boyfriend, known as the Arizona Kid.

Vagabond Loafers (1949): Who's the biggest drip: Larry, Shemp or Moe? It's hard to say, but when the Stooges' plumbing company is hired to fix a leak in a mansion, they turn the slippery circumstances to their advantage and foil a pair of art thieves who've stolen a $50,000 painting.

Dopey Dicks (1950): The Stooges almost lose their heads - literally - when they rescue the dame they met while cleaning a private detective's office, who has been kidnapped by a mad professor seeking human brains for translation.

Punchy Cowpunchers (1950): Being a Stooge isn't all it's cracked up to be. A commanding officer sends Moe, Larry and Shemp on a mission to confront merciless outlaws The Dillion Gang. But when Shemp hides in the safe that they're about to crack open, it's the Dillions who wind up begging for mercy.

Merry Mavericks (1951): This reworking of Phony Express features a few new plot twists and just as many laughs. It looks like the Stooges are going to lose their battle with bank boards! Red Morgan and his thugs, until Shemp dons a headless Indian costume that knocks them senseless.
B00005M070Three Stooges - Dizzy DoctorsB00005O5BMThree Stooges - Healthy Wealthy & DumbB00004U1ETThe Three Stooges - Spook LouderB00018D3QYThe Three Stooges - Stooges and the LawB0000VCZLQThe Three Stooges: Stooges at Work163371General163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video415914General163450Television404276Genres130DVD139452Video13744911Maverick357320011M356468011TV Series By Letter163450Television404276Genres130DVD139452Video299395Three Stooges357327011T356468011TV Series By Letter163450Television404276Genres130DVD139452Video291008General163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video291054Classics163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video409818Adams, Ernie409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video417512Chesebro, George416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video416372Campbell, Paul416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video420456Dent, Vernon419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video428664Howard, Shemp426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video434892Mahoney, Jock434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video437066Merton, John434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video573628All Sony Pictures Titles516494Sony Pictures Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1077584Three Stooges516494Sony Pictures Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579550( T )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620860111940 - 1949562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR3P3LS7HIV3C69More Comedies to Brighten Your Day Part 21CT78CTYJQ4OSThree Stooges on DVD!!!!!39XTQDKG22XANThe Best Three Stooges tapes IIIB000A6CL3Ihttp://www.amazon.com/Red-Ryder-Double-Feature-Vol/dp/B000A6CL3I%3FSubscriptionId%3D1DWXK7HJTP76664KT902%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB000A6CL3I63558http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/610XGW0X4XL._SL75_.jpg7553http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/610XGW0X4XL._SL160_.jpg160113http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/610XGW0X4XL.jpg500352http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/610XGW0X4XL._SL30_.jpg3021http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/610XGW0X4XL._SL75_.jpg7553http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/610XGW0X4XL._SL160_.jpg160113http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/610XGW0X4XL.jpg500352Bill ElliottGeorge 'Gabby' HayesRobert BlakeAlice FlemingHerbert Rawlinson1.33:1NR (Not Rated)DVDLouis GraySidney PickerAnthony ColdewayEarle SnellFred HarmanTaylor CavenR.G.
If you enjoyed "Volume 10" why not pick up of "Red Ryder Double Features Volume 9" featuring "Marshal of Laredo" (1945) and "Tucson Raiders" (1944)...also the latest Bobby J. Copeland's book on "Bill Elliott:The Peaceable Man" is chuck full of answers to all the questions his fans had from early on...plenty of thrills, adventure and loaded with action.
Under director's Ray Taylor and Lewis D. Collins, two of the best in the Serial genre, associate producer Henry MacRae, original story Jack Foley, screenplay by George H. Plympton and Maurice Tombragel, music score by Hans J. Salter, Frank Skinner, Milton Rosen...the cast include Milburn Stones (Jim Hudson), Marjorie Weaver (Ruth Miller), Ralph Morgan (Dr. Miller), Edgar Kennedy (Bosun Higgins), Samuel S. Hinds (Herman Brock), Martin Kosleck (Dr. Hauss), Fuzzy Knight ('Grit' Hartman), Anthony Warde (Brandon), Tom Keene (Burger), Edmund Cobb (Miner Worker Preparing Ambush), Jack Ingram (not listed), Jack Rockwell (Mine Thug)...back to the feature as Universal Pictures is always good till the last drop and this serial is no exception...there is a great deal of entertainment here for the cliffhanger fans out there...all courtesy of VCI Entertainment, who in my humble opinion is the best there is in restoring early serials and features.

The lead role is played by easily the worst actor ever to appear in a serial, probably the worst ever in any motion picture. The second and third leads listed in the credits are animals. It was such an early Republic serial that it has most of the inferior qualities of Mascot Studios. And yet, there's something about it that makes it worth watching.

Watching Mala try to speak his lines is fascinating, like watching a train wreck. Not only can he not act, he doesn't speak clearly. It must have been embarrassing to the rest of the cast. He makes Sammy Baugh ("King of the Texas Rangers") look like Laurence Olivier. You have to know the background to understand why Mala was ever cast in the lead. A native Inuit, in 1933 he had been cast in an all-native American film called "Eskimo," produced by the legendary Irving Thalberg and billed by MGM as "the biggest picture ever made," and it was a huge success. He later worked in quite a few other pictures as both actor and cameraman, and became one of Hollywood's elite--he numbered Johnny Weissmuller, Bob Hope, and Stan Laurel among his close friends. He also appeared in less important roles in other serials, "Hawk of the Wilderness" (1938), "Great Adventures of Wild Bill Hickock" (1938), and "Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe" (1940). He appeared in some 25 films over a period of almost 30 years, often as a Polynesian or Hawaiian. He passed away on the set of his last film in 1952 at the age of only 46. His son Ted Mala became the first Alaska native doctor.

One or two of the cliffhangers are quite clever; then again, many are laughably bad. In one, Mala is diving with an air helmet when his air hose is cut, he calls "I need air!" and then just walks along the bottom until he reaches the beach. In another, he's clinging to the edge of an airplane wing which crashes into the water, killing all aboard--he survives, without explanation. In yet another, a plane is seen to crash into the sea, but in the resolution it actually lands safely.

In spite of the lead's terrible acting--or perhaps partly because of it--the serial is worth watching. Mala does have some charisma and you do want to root for him. Mamo Clark makes a fetching heroine in her sarong. The horse and the dog, holdovers from the Mascot era, are used effectively and are fun to watch. B0000E69IS10A1GWSZ4I2QGCNJA1GWSZ4I2QGCNJLaughing GravySacramento, CA United States02008-10-03How to make this serial even better...Mmmkay, so the Serial Squadron took a rotten serial, truncated it, added color effects, and further monkeyed with it to make it "better". Uh-huh. So here's my advice, serial fans: don't buy it at all, the ULTIMATE truncation. Now, you've not only made the serial 'better' but you've just saved fifteen bucks.

The Serial Squadron is capable of outstanding work (see their GANG BUSTERS for example) but this is their work at its worse.
CRUSOE trivia:

Of the many hundreds of sound serials produced, this is the only one that's 14 episodes in length. It's also the first-ever serial to feature re-cap chapters, which consist of film clips from previous episodes.

The story involves a dirigible that exploded. Ironically, six months after CRUSOE was released, the lighter-than-air ship Hindenburg would do exactly that: explode and crash while docking at Lakehurst, N.J.

Was one of George Lucas's inspirations for STAR WARS.

Was edited down into a TV movie in 1966.

Professional wrestler Theodore 'Tiny' Roebuck was a Cherokee Indian. He appeared in only three movies besides CRUSOE. Here Tiny portrayed (what else?) a wrestler.

WellsHauppauge, New York United States12005-07-30Singing while swinging a gunI saw this on an old video -vhs- that was paired with Springtime in the Rockies. The only great thing about this movie, more or less, is that Smiley Burnette and Gene Autry both sing songs while holding a handgun and swinging it back and forth: Smiley's is "My Old 45" and Gene's is his version of Red River Valley (previously sung solo) later in the film forcing a group of rabble rousers to sing along with him to "Red River Valley" instead of wrecking the town. Fortunately, in this film, Smiley Burnette does not put on women's clothing!B00006AUG821ASA96U5KLGMEYASA96U5KLGMEYBVTParanaque City Philippines12003-10-27Not up to par - DVD wise. This movie is the original of the re-released version known as Red River Valley, a VHS copy of which I have. This DVD is of medium quality as it appears to have been made not from a film print but from a VHS tape. The double shadows and ghost effects are obvious. MY Goodtimes EP mode VHS copy was far better than this.B00006AUG855ABLGOMMRFB6LWABLGOMMRFB6LWPATRICIA T. ALMDALEAULANDER, NC USA52002-01-01Man Of The FrontierAnother title for this movie was Man Of The Frontier. Gene delivers cattle to a small town which is having a struggle keeping swindlers from shutting down the dam that supplied water to the valley...Smiley Burnette is his sidekick and at his funniest best! Lot's of action from this early movie made in the late 1930's. You will see a rising star really doing a dangerous stunt himself. Autry did alot of his own stunts and in this one almost got sweep down the river because of slippery moss as he was wading across the dam according his film biography. So watch this and see him progressing on his way to the top!! What can you say!! He was a HERO!!B00006RCLJThe Old CorralB000E8N988Rim of the CanyonB00009NHB4Riders of the Whistling PinesB00082ZRBCLoaded PistolsB000JU8HFQBig Show509224King, B.B.465350Artists163420Music Video & Concerts404276Genres130DVD139452Video291061Westerns163428Musicals508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video722783011General AAS508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video291008General163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video291054Classics163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video333755011Gene Autry898804Western Stars163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video1693950114-for-3 All DVDs1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video411234Autry, Gene409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video415076Burnette, Smiley411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video417512Chesebro, George416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video423292Flint, Sam422476( F )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video425684Grant, Frances424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video427486Hearn, Edward426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video444586Rue, Frank La442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video452784Wilsey, Jay451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video456424Eason, B Reeves456418( E )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579536( M )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video562085011Up to 1939562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video2V4TO2OP5ZX3DSMILEY BURNETTE: Cowboy Frogus2FZ6PZDI2RVDAGENE AUTRY: Out West in the 1930's
