Helen Mirren and Julie Waters demonstrate why they are two of the best actresses in the business but their fellow calendar girls are not overshadowed, even thought the actresses play them may be relatively unknown. Worth seeing any night of the week.

Wonder if they'd consider a sequel about Chris's suggestion for a George Clooney calendar - 11 fully-clothed and a "lift the flap" for December.

Have not looked at movie yet.DescriptionWhen 12 ordinary members of the Women's Institute, a prim and proper local ladies' club, decide they need to find a more compelling way to raise money for a new charity, they turn to their traditional annual calendar and give it a very untraditional twist. Behind the usual baked goods, the apple pressing, and the flower arrangements are the women -- completely nude! Starring 2003 Golden Globe nominee Helen Mirren (Best Actress, CALENDAR GIRLS) and Julie Walters (HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS), CALENDAR GIRLS is a terrifically entertaining comedy. And that's the naked truth.Amazon.comIn the sensible yet elegant hands of actresses Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, Calendar Girls walks a fine line between sappiness and snickering and ends up both wonderfully funny and gently touching. When her best friend Annie (Walters, Billy Elliot) loses her husband, Chris (Mirren, Prime Suspect, Gosford Park) cooks up a scheme to memorialize him: They and their friends--all fiftysomething women--will make a nude calendar to raise money for the hospital where he died. The calendar becomes hugely popular, but the success may drive a wedge between the two women's friendship. Based on an actual event, Calendar Girls carefully balances the stories of several women as it follows the calendar's media explosion, becoming a surprisingly moving fable of loss, determination, and the perils of fame. And let's face it--Helen Mirren is one of the wittiest and sexiest women alive, clothes on or not. --Bret FetzerB000BITVAGLadies in LavenderB00000ILECWaking Ned DevineB00003CXMYSaving GraceB000M341RIThe Full Monty - Fully Exposed EditionB0000VD02YUnder the Tuscan Sun (Widescreen Edition)579588General579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video722735011General AAS579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video163371General163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video291142Underdogs291103By Theme163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video291136Friends291103By Theme163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video412142Bassett, Linda411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419192Crosbie, Annette416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video425162Glen, Georgie424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video429168Imrie, Celia429104( I )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video429550James, Geraldine429340( J )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video437558Mirren, Helen434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video446166Sharian, John444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video451420Walters, Julie451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video452882Wilton, Penelope451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355715011General355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579516( C )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405387011PG-13405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620920112000 & Newer562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603113011Dolby603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671508011Dolby671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR3LZRSJ6WXR094Movies featuring actors from the Harry Potter seriesR3M97JV9FKQT2ZFave Brit Chic FlicRWBUXF3ESZO2OMovies watched in '07R23EENK2TYUK77Gems Off The Beaten PathR25BMIAC9IPDDHCinema GirlsR1LZCGUYKGJRNDSex-Positive FilmsR2CH70HEC347G3Gray Power--or Coming of Third Age FilmsR3T0E01WHYT6HUfav movies part 1R225F12ATIFQUDMovies I Could Watch Over and Over AgainRBV4RUCKFD3J0Best Movies EVA!

TaylorGFTBiloxi, MS USA02009-01-29Memorable Performances Overcome Pedestrian ScriptIt seems that British cinema has fallen into a rut, at least where comedy is concerned: like numerous other films of the past decade, KINKY BOOTS combines a touch of mischief, a touch of sex, a lot of "lets feel good," and a "let's root for the underdog" plot. But although the formula has become as pedestrian and predictable as last year's high heels, KINKY BOOTS still shines in terms of performances, with Chiwetel Ejiofor leading the cast as a professional drag queen in search of footwear that won't break down in the middle of a nightclub act.

Very, very, very loosely suggested by an English shoe factory that faced similar marketing woes and took a similar route, KINKY BOOTS is the tale of Charlie Price (Joel Edgerton), who unwillingly inherits a shoe factory and then discovers that it is on the verge of bankruptcy. A trip to London leads him to a chance encounter with drag queen Lola (Ejiofor), who has no end of problem with footwear--an encounter that inspires Price to go into the niche market of women's style footwear for men. Charlie and Lola join forces to design the new line, but needless to say things don't go as smoothly as they wish. Charlie's bride-to-be opposes the whole thing; the factory workers aren't wild about having a drag queen in their midst; and both Charlie and Lola have personal issues to work through in the process.

Although the concept is clever, the script is not: you can easily see around each and every bend and forecast every plot turn long before it arrives on the screen. But the performances make the thing work. As previously mentioned, the big noise here is Chiwetel Ejiofor, best known for such films as PRETTY DIRTY THINGS and AMERICAN GANGSTER, who puts over Lola in a major way: from stage act to factory floor, he is entirely believeable, extremely sympathetic, and often downright hilarious. Edgerton is equally well cast as the conflicted factory owner, and the cast is well-rounded out by such memorable supporting players as Sarah Jane Potts, Jemima Rooper, and Stephen Marcus, to name but a few.

When all is said and done, KINKY BOOTS is a charming film that is a shade too formula for its own good--but even so it is worth a look. The DVD package includes two brief features, one on the factory that inspired the story and a standard "making of;" there is also a director and cast commentary. Recommended, but don't expect too much.

It's just a fabulous story. Complete with "Rags to Riches," "What do I do NOW?," "What makes a man?", and "What is most valuable and important in our lives?" themes. Sounds esoteric when I explain it that way. But when played by the most excellent Chiwetel Ejiofor, it's not. Joel Edgerton and Sarah Jane Potts turn in excellent performances as do all the actors and supporting cast, across the board. There's singing at times too, if you like that sort of thing. You will, even if you don't! I don't, and I did. Like it. Go ahead and try this one. I've watched it probably a dozen times with various friends. Everyone I've watched it with has loved it. Some have also bought copies to share with their friends. "Change your mind about someone." (If you watch the movie, you'll understand.) DescriptionInspired by a hilarious true story, this refreshing, feel-good comedy comes from the hit-making team that brought you CALENDAR GIRLS! For generations, the Price family has made very sensible, very conservative shoes for men. But to save the business from imminent bankruptcy, young Charlie Price turns to an unlikely new creative consultant: a sassy cross-dressing cabaret singer whose outrageous style and wild designs are a breath of fresh air in the stuffy old factory! Fun and original, it's a must-have movie that proves the best way to fit in is to stand out!Amazon.comWhen you are a tall strapping man who dresses like a woman for a living, finding a pair of sexy but durable shoes can be worth your weight in gold. Lola (Chiwetel Ejiofor)--a drag queen also known as Simon--finds her shoe salvation in straight-laced Charlie Price (Joel Edgerton), who has inherited his father's shoe factory. Unable to pay the bills making traditional loafers and wingtips, Charlie agrees to make Lola a pair of kinky boots that turn out to be so fabulous the pair end up going into business together. They face a few obstacles, such as the bawdy union workers who aren't too keen on taking orders from a drag queen who's more of a man than they are. Then there's Charlie's posh real estate girlfriend, who wants to convert the factory into pricey condos. While the movie doesn't provide any real surprises (or even any scenes as suggestive as its title might suggest), the English film (which is loosely based on a true story) is highly entertaining that will delight fans of both comedy and shoes. --Jae-Ha KimB000ERU8EWKinky BootsB000OPOAKCThe Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert (Extra Frills Edition)B0000714BPTo Wong Foo Thanks for Everything Julie NewmarB000ETRCN0Mrs. Henderson Presents (Widescreen Edition)B0011KQSZ4Death at a Funeral579588General579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video722735011General AAS579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video163371General163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video291113Buddy Films291103By Theme163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video14155001Comedy of Manners291103By Theme163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video14155041Gender Bending291103By Theme163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video163427General163420Music Video & Concerts404276Genres130DVD139452Video412142Bassett, Linda411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video442378Pugh, Robert440340( P )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video458226Jarrold, Julian458164( J )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355715011General355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video468392All Titles468390Miramax Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video541276Comedy468390Miramax Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video541278Drama468390Miramax Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579532( K )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1265183011Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray Disc Trade-In44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405387011PG-13405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620920112000 & Newer562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603113011Dolby603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671508011Dolby671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR2MM9N5ZPSGF9Gay Movie EnjoymentR3IAF7APR9JBQBBest Drag Queen MooviesRLQZ8TYX9C2V2Gender TalkR11W0K9X9GUIVOMovies for a Rainy AfternoonR3005E5RCWFD84The Best of BritishR2HRJ8YHFLSZ8SRai's Fave MoviesR3NALLPUARSFRStop romantic comediesRYPN6UBANGVH1Funniest movies I've ever seenR2J5NDQ668SBL0Labor Day Film FestRM1OGN1YOVQSBDVDs My Roommate has made me watch

The Hours was pure Oscar bait--a prestigey adaptation of an intellectual novel (see The English Patient for another) with Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep for God's sake--but beneath its pretty shell the film is pretty empty; by no means a bad film, it's a decent drama that benefited from a good marketing campaign and December release.B00005JKTI51A3EBHHCZO6V2A4A3EBHHCZO6V2A4Amaranthmusic fanNorthern California12009-01-10The Hours of Our Lives"The Hours" is a quiet, meditative piece about what makes life worth living. It unites the stories of three women- Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman), struggling with suicidal thoughts, Laura Brown (Julianne Moore), expecting a child and struggling with her desires, and Clarissa (Meryl Streep), who's watching her ex-husband die from AIDS. The trio of women share a self-destructive streak. Ironically, and powerfully, the movie is about living life.

Virginia dotes on her husband, Leonard, yet she feels passionately for other women. She authored "Orlando" in honor of her onetime lover Vita Sackville-West. She is writing "Mrs. Dalloway." In the '50s, Laura is expecting a child with her boring but gentle husband (a brilliant, understated John C. Reilly) However, it is her bosomy neighbor (Toni Collette) who awakens her conflicted desires. Laura considers suicide. Realizing the unborn life within her, and reading "Mrs. Dalloway", she chooses life. In 2001, Clarissa is caring for her ex-husband, who's suffering from AIDS (Ed Harris) She cannot understand his profound pain. Though he has a boyfriend (Jeff Daniels,in a surprisingly good turn) and she has a girlfriend (Alison Janney),they still have a spousal bond. He calls her "Mrs. Dalloway." The underlying mystery is--what links the three women?

"The Hours" seems to glorify suicide, from Kidman drowning herself to Harris hurtling himself off a window ledge. However, it is Laura's choice for life that gives the story's three threads their essential link. Life makes connectedness possible. The hypnotic music from Philip Glass is excellent. Moore, Kidman, Streep, and Harris give luminous performances.

"The Hours" is a contemplative masterpiece.B00005JKTI42A1W67810BRQSDOA1W67810BRQSDOJ'RoThe Only OneTulsa, OK32008-11-06SIMPLY AMAZING"The Hours" is a beautifully crafted, thought-provoking, brilliantly acted movie. Superlatives fail to describe this film. It is a movie about the lives of 3 women, their depression, their choices.

Nicole Kidman is convincing as the silently tortured bi-polar Virginia Wolfe who desperately wants to be normal for the sake of everyone around her, but because of her untreated illness, cannot. Juliann Moore is the most heart-wrenching as the mother who desperately wants to be a good mother and wife but because she is so emotionally dettached and unfulfilled in those roles, she cannot. Merle Streep is the lesbian who plays nurse-maid to her male ex-lover now dying of AIDS. She wants to rescue him. She cannot.

Three actresses playing the roles of three women who are unsuccessfully playing roles and whose characters ultimately fail miserably. Their lives are poignant: brutally so.

The poet/author, Virginia Wolfe, devoid of all hope that she can ever overcome her violent mood swings and exhausted from trying, wades into the river and drowns herself. This is the only way she believes she can save(or free) herself and those she loves. Juliann Moore's character commits the unthinkable act of abandoning her young son who worships her. In her mind she is saving (or freeing) herself and those she loves. Merle Streep's character assumes the ever-busy role of "Mrs. Dalloway" (the character from Virginia Wolfe's famous novel). She desperately attempts to distract her dying ex-lover who tragically wants to die more than anything because he never could get over the crippling truth that the mother he worshipped abandoned him.

Three hurting women, much loved, who abandon those who love them. This is a sad movie. It is not a movie made for entertainment as much for philosophical value. It is deep and thought provoking. If you are not accustomed to such films or have an aversion to same, this movie is not for you. As for me, I believe this movie is one of the greatest of all time. I highly recommend it to anyone who is not above soul-searching and exploring the depths of the female psyche.B00005JKTI22A2R4XG0L7Z01V8A2R4XG0L7Z01V8Dumb Blonde ReviewingI'm A Lonely Angel Stuck On The Slow PathIn my bed22008-10-01DepressingI bought The Hours for cheap, so I was impressed, and for once, ended up watching it within a couple of days of buying - not something I do often, judging by my "to watch" pile!

I always watch the trailers first on the DVD, if they're available. Some people disagree with this. Personally, I like doing it. Plus, I like watching the "coming soon" trailers too - it always gives me an idea as to what DVDs to add to my wishlist etc.

I watched The Hours with my Dad, and actually had to WAKE him up at the end - now he never falls asleep at movies. I do. What is The Hours about? Three women, with very little lives, and feeling trapped at every turn. Yes, there are also women kissing in this movie, for the guys - and girls I guess.

I didn't identify with any of the women, I found the film quite dull, and uninteresting. It had so much promise. And I couldn't handle watching Ed Harris in his role - normally I love him too!

I wouldn't recommend this movie - maybe it's because I haven't read the book, I don't know. I'd be interested in reading the book, perhaps, but I still have quite a few books on my "to read" list. (Stop buying books and DVDs!) I'll still keep the DVD - after all it was only cheap, and if I ever read the book, I might give it another try again. No reason for this movie but to waste an hour and a half. The potential of these actors together would have been awesome but they were wasted on a trash movie.DescriptionTHE HOURS tells the story of three very different individuals who share the feeling that they have been living their lives for someone else. Virginia Woolf (Kidman) lives in a suburb of London in the 1920ās as she struggles to begin writing her first great novel, Mrs. Dalloway, while also attempting to overcome the mental illness that threatens to engulf her. Laura Brown (Moore), a young wife and mother in post-World War II Los Angeles, is just starting to read Mrs. Dalloway, and is so deeply affected by it that she begins to question the life she has chosen for herself. Then, in contemporary New York City, Clarissa Vaughan (Streep) is a modern-day mirror image of Woolfās Mrs. Dalloway as she plans what may be the final party for her friend and former lover, Richard (Harris), who is dying of AIDS.Amazon.com essential videoDelicate and hypnotic, The Hours interweaves three stories with remarkable skill: in the 1920s Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman) grapples with her inner demons and slowly works on her novel Mrs. Dalloway; in 1949 housewife Laura Brown (Julianne Moore) feels her own destructive impulses; and in 1999 book editor Clarissa Vaughn (Meryl Streep)--much like the title character of Woolf's novel--prepares to throw a party, in honor of her dearest friend, a seriously ill poet (Ed Harris). Small details reverberate from story to story as a powerhouse cast (including Allison Janney, Toni Collette, Claire Danes, Jeff Daniels, John C. Reilly, Stephen Dillane, and Miranda Richardson) gives subtle and beautifully modulated performances. In the hands of director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot), The Hours is almost more a piece of music than a story, and like music, it may move you in unexpected ways. --Bret Fetzer0784011710Sophie's ChoiceB001F0RA4SThe Hours: A NovelB0001US7Q8Mrs. Dalloway0783240171Out of AfricaB00005JLQHFar From Heaven163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740116Artists & Writers291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740126Psychological Drama291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740148Mothers & Sons740138Family Life163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722752011General AAS740138Family Life163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video291309Period Piece163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video1081770114-for-3 Drama1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1693950114-for-3 All DVDs1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video412142Bassett, Linda411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418254Collette, Toni416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419346Culkin, Michael416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419738Danes, Claire419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video420726Dillane, Stephen419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video426992Harris, Ed426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video429632Janney, Allison429340( J )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video431330Kidman, Nicole430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video435606Martindale, Margo434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video437946Moore, Julianne434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video443164Reilly, John C442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video443518Richardson, Miranda442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video448344Streep, Meryl444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3234081All Paramount3234061Paramount Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3234131Drama3234061Paramount Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579526( H )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405387011PG-13405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620920112000 & Newer562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video1253966011Best Actress1253959011Academy Awards1253957011Award Winners386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoRX36A658F1F8XLGBT essentialsR227W2DV9195LQmovies I own part 5R26ODMEBGJQ879The complete Claire DanesR11QWSEYLL7N8SBeauty, Misery, Transcendence: 14 Favorite FilmsR22I9JMM10JDR4Meryl Streep's Best MoviesR2ZV6GGPS73YFLMy Top 100 Favorite Films on DVD Part 3RE4DI2EUVL8HHA Trio of Talent: Kathy Bates, Michelle Pfeiffer and Meryl StreepR2I0YHZBT0W4XYThe best of Jodie Foster and Nicole KidmanR21SJ37CFOOJC3TOP 10 LGBTQ MOVIESR270N0LIPUP3A8My "Should-See" Movies

I'm a sucker for a good James Herbert adaptation. They are few and far between, especially given that Herbert is, in his native England, the rough equivalent of Stephen King on this side of the pond. He's written any number of spine-chilling novels, and every one I've ever read, including this one, have been fantastic. And yet only four of Herbert's novels have been adapted--The Survivor in 1981, The Rats (as Deadly Eyes) in 1982, and then both Fluke and Haunted in 1995. Please, someone, adapt a few more.

Haunted is the story of David Ash (Aidan Quinn), a professor and skeptic in Britain who is invited out to the supposedly-haunted Edbrook House to chronicle the supposedly paranormal activity there. While he's not too sure about the ghosts, he's certainly bewitched by young Christina Marielle (Kate Beckinsale), who lives there with her brothers Robert (Anthony Andrews, recently of Last Night) and Simon (The Discovery of Heaven's Alex Lowe). The three of them, very close, are presided over by their nanny (Affinity's Anna Massey), and are visited regularly by a local doctor (Sir John Gielgud), but are otherwise pretty much cut off from society. While David is initially amused by the somewhat archaic nature of life at Edbrook, he does eventually start to realize that there are some pretty weird things happening there that have nothing at all to do with isolation.

I'm not a huge fan of either Quinn or Gilbert, but I'm willing to put up with almost anything for a Herbert adaptation. While Gilbert does go a little over the top with the special effects in a scene or two, Quinn pulls off what may be the role of his career here. He's skeptical, but faced with something he doesn't understand. He's trying to be tough as nails, faced with trying to keep his faith to a girlfriend at home while being tempted with one of the most beautiful women he's ever seen, one who's obviously interested in him. I've always thought of Quinn as one of those flat-affect actors who can't play anything but himself, but he brings a low-key current to this role that's just as electric as the current running through the house that may or may not be haunted. Beckinsale looks just as good in lacy frills as she does in skintight leather, and fans of her beauty will be gratified with the amount of time she also spends out of those lacy frills. Andrews and Lowe do a sufficient job of playing the good cop/bad cop routine, and Massey is just awesome, as she usually is. (Sir John's performance goes unremarked not because it's in any way pale, because he's Sir John Gielgud. Can you imagine him giving a bad performance?)

All this said, Haunted doesn't hold a candle to The Survivor; Gilbert and screenwriter Timothy Prager seem far more interested in the romance aspect of the screenplay most of the time, rather than the supernatural aspects, and as a result the movie plays out more like a costume drama than it does a ghost story. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but when you're seeing a James Herbert adaptation, you expect the ghosts to come fast and thick (as well as the deviance, which is tastefully understated here; that could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your point of view). Still, not bad. Look at it as a romance with supernatural elements instead of a horror flick, and you'll have a good time with it. ***

I just thought the movie was very slow and predictable, the "twist ending" could be seen practically from the opening credits. But maybe I've just watched too much horror to be surprised anymore. The ghost story takes a backseat to the love story, so if that's your thing, you may really enjoy this, but from a horror fan's perspective, I found the whole thing to be very blah.B00005LQ0E20A3W13VVBRY5GL7A3W13VVBRY5GL7Review LoverReviewLoverAt a place...02008-08-02Brideshead UnderdevelopedThis is an odd movie. It's a fairly basic premise: a wealthy trio of dilettante siblings ask a cynical paranormal investigator (suffering from his own demons) to come and exorcise their beloved childhood nanny, who is plagued by ghosts and careening towards the boobyhatch. When he arrives at Stock Stately Home, things go (literally) bump in the night and suddenly the cynic is confronted with that which he has always decried. And et ceterah.

The first and most commendable thing about "Haunted" is that there's a very fine sense of creeping dread and several elegant scares to be had over the course of the first hour of this movie. Several scenes, not least the opening with its two very competent child actors, jump from the screen and speak to a very high standard.

Unfortunately, for every decent, well-filmed moment in "Haunted", there's a corresponding boring and/or unintentionally funny moment to counteract the sense of terror. Director Lewis Gilbert's lack of consistency is as confusing as it is detrimental to the overall effectiveness of "Haunted" - witness the mounting dread of David's (Aidan Quinn) first night in Edbrook House completely undermined by the appalling special effect sequence of his second night: it looks more like a commercial for some sort of salt-based floor cleanser than anything else. A wonderful set-piece involving a piano playing in an abandoned music room is similarly undone by David's positively gymnastic leap from a car towards the film's end... ...confusingly, "Haunted" seems to be saying, "Look, I know I can be great, but you're just going to have to sit there and put up with mediocre. Boo!!".

The acting here suffers from the same bipolarity of standard: on one hand, Quinn and Kate Beckinsale have a believable chemistry together and neither of them does much wrong - but on the other hand, the grinning foolishness of Alex Lowe and the downright laziness of Brideshead Reunited (Anthony Andrews and a surprisingly underused John Gielgud) make for tiresome, vanilla viewing.

This movie lacks a basic sense of direction. When it's good, it's excellent: when it's bad (and it is more bad than good: the end is tired and predictable, the visual effects laughable even for 1996, and there are LOTS of continuity goofs, in addition to the plain sloppy scenes) it's pretty unwatchable.

Great alternatives include 1989's "The Woman In Black", 1963's "The Innocents" and, of course, "The Others". Each of these movies delivers something in spades that "Haunted" fatally lacks: quality. Avoid this one unless you choose to see it on TV.B00005LQ0E30ANAYSRE3LX8GZANAYSRE3LX8GZMicheal HuntHellbourne02008-06-13Haunted - Very Predictable, but enjoyable.I guess these movies with the twist on them is becoming old news, because I guessed from only a few minutes into the plot what the outcome was going to be, and I guessed it right. And my suspicions grew stronger as the movie unveiled a few more clues to it's final outcome.

However, even tho I predicated what was going to happen in the end, there was a few twist and turns that I could not work out, and kept watching to find out where it was going, and that was enough to keep me interested from start to end of this story of a writer who is invited to a house to meet an elderly woman who was the nanny of of the house's 3 children. (The people who owned the house, not the house itself)

She claims she has been seeing ghosts and the house is haunted. Yet the 2 brothers and daughter she has helped to raise all there lives think she is just crazy.

So this man who has written many ghost stories based on the facts, who has never really encountered a ghost and claims they are non existent, stays with them in the house for a couple of days, to investigate and discovers there are in fact strange things happening in this house.

He suspects there may be someone behind it at first, but discovers much more then he ever expected to by the end of this film.

------

As I said, I worked out very early in the film the outcome result of who certain characters and there story really where, but there are a lot of other things I did not predict, and it keeps you guessing to the end if your thoughts are right, or if it's something else.

If you care, I thought it was going to turn out that 2 of the characters where married and lying about there status etc.. but I guessed that one wrong. So if your someone who easily works out outcomes before they happen like I sometimes do, then I'd urge you to check this one out as it can confuse and trick you into one belief throwing you off the track your think it is going to in some aspects of the plot.

On the scare factor, I don't think it's on the creepy or spooky side of film making at all. It's more of a mystery film surrounding the supernatural then anything else really, don't expect blood and gore and terrifying scares from the walking dead, it's a clean mystery that slowly unravels as it proceeds with interesting twists and tales, yet very predicable for some like me, but even with that said, I still think it was a very enjoyable movie.

If you see it for rental, check it out, it won't kill you.
Amazon.comProfessor David Ash (Aidan Quinn) is skeptical of the supernatural, yet he is invited by elderly Nanny Tess Webb (Anna Massey) to investigate paranormal goings-on at her country estate. When Ash arrives, he meets her three adult children (Kate Beckinsale among them, who becomes his future love interest) and the family doctor (John Gielgud), all of whom deny anything is going on and claim that Nanny Tess is merely hallucinating. Yet after spending some time there, the professor begins experiencing unexplainable visions that only Nanny Tess, and often only he, sees. Furthermore the ghost of his sister, who died as a child in a drowning accident, begins to roam the estate. Is he imagining it and going mad? Or is the house truly haunted? Adapted by Tim Prager from the James Herbert novel, Lewis Gilbert's highly memorable film is a brilliant haunted-house tale with chilling scenes and an exceptional plot twist. --Bryan ReesmanB0001932ZUUncovered0783116926The ChangelingB00009MEKNLaurel CanyonB00023P4I8The Dreamers (Original Uncut NC-17 Version)B00008L3SPRoyal Deceit579588General579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video722735011General AAS579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video503134Period Piece502916By Theme163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video291309Period Piece163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video569602Gothic292225By Theme163396Horror404276Genres130DVD139452Video569598Haunted House292225By Theme163396Horror404276Genres130DVD139452Video163407General163396Horror404276Genres130DVD139452Video923878General512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video292287Mystery512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video163411Suspense512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video163442General163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video415914General163450Television404276Genres130DVD139452Video410610Andrews, Anthony409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video412142Bassett, Linda411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video412392Beckinsale, Kate411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video424912Gielgud, John424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video435714Massey, Anna434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video442532Quinn, Aidan442450( Q )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video446112Shalet, Victoria444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video447146Smith, Liz444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video447398Somerville, Geraldine444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355715011General355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355718011Period Dramas355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355886011Period Piece355859011By Theme355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video354767011All Lionsgate Titles468376Lionsgate Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579526( H )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405388011R405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620910111990 - 1999562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoRSWHH3TY99ZCOGeneral Zombie's Movies Watched in 01/09R3EPEM0AJ0BAEHHorror Movies That I LoveR302JA59UFIXBLOne man's guide to Kate BeckinsaleR19XWOKPB3WVL9Quirky moviesR14JXXR83PV4VGhostliest Ghost MoviesR28CG42OTT97TGHaunted MoviesR16N0NUG7GVW1RFavorite horror films from my own DVD collectionR34JVRK55QE9CQBest ghost storiesR2VZDXNCM6X7A3We've Got BUSH (Full Female Frontal)R327JM4LVD6DNBCult Movies 28

Rocklein02009-05-18"Where is the sin?"Ralph Fiennes was good in this movie. It is amazing to me that he was able to so transform himself into this character. In my opinion his performance was better than Blanchett's though she was good also. The story is kind of deep with lots of different angles, the religious angle is both mystical and traditional/conventional. Story takes place in the late 1800s in Australia, New South Wales - not surprisingly, the scenery is lush and beautiful. But beyond scenery, there are some real sublime moments in the human drama as well. Fiennes character is deeply religious and bases his communication with God almost on I Ching style divination tactics. That is, heads or tails will help him determine what he beleives God wants him to do.

To come up with money to meet the basic necessities of living, he takes to betting on horse racing after a friend introduces him to the pastime. He keeps what he needs and gives the rest to the poor. His faith seems to keep him winning. It starts to become a real issue for him though when he realizes he is no longer using the gambling simply as a means to an end, but that in fact he is enjoying the thrill of it as well. There is a hilarious scene where, somehow by mistake Blanchett's character has come to him for confession and when she confesses that she loves to gamble, Fiennes character comes to the conclusion that gambling cannot really be a sin since to beleive in God already is the greatest gamble - those who beleive weigh the odds and are finally betting that He does exist. Since this belief itself is the ultimate wager - how could God fault a person for wagers much smaller and of much less importance - dice or cards for example?

"Where is the sin? We bet. It is all in Pascal. We bet that there is a God. We bet our lives on it. We calculate the odds and the return.. Our anxiety about our bet wakes us before dawn in a cold sweat. And God sees us suffer. I cannot beleive that such a God, whose fundamental requirement of us is that we gamble our souls - it's true, we stake everything on the fact of His existence -- I cannot beleive that such a God can look unkindly on a chap wagering a few quid on the likelihood of a dumb animal crossing the line first..... unless... unless it might be considered a blasphemy to apply to common pleasure that which is divine."

Oscar is not without his personal demons, mostly in the form of ideals that he is constantly trying to live up to. The ending of the movie was something of a shock, loaded with symbolic possibilities and plain poetry, in a word (see 'a glass church').

I saw an Australian version of this DVD. The cover shows Oscar holding a 5 of diamonds, not a 5 of hearts. I think I prefer the 5 of diamonds and the clear-eyed expression of the actors rather than the 'romantic' look of the Stateside version. The movie is more than a romance - although it is a love story as tragic as any by Shakespeare. This movie is not a high speed ride, but it is watchable all the same. Filmed in the English countryside where the weather is infinitely damp and dreary. Oscar Hopkins grows up into a tainted Anglican priest who met his fate on a floating church. The rivers there are so narrow a healthy boy could jump from one bank to another.

Grown and in higher education, he became involved in gambling as an off-shoot of his wild influencial friends who enjoyed corrupting him, like Justin. He became a pathological gambler. Some of the tale was hard to understand as those Australians talk funnier than the British. Cate Blanchett, an American, portrayed the grown Lucinda as an innocent manueverer who met Oscar on the boat and confessed to him as a priest, about her fascination to play dice and cards. He understood her fascination as he too bet on the horses, like Mark. Her love, another priest, does not believe in the virgin birth, nor do I. It takes a man not a spirit. He married someone else.

Lucinda's orange cat matched her hair color -- and Oscar's. Fate and gambling brought them together in an uncouth and wild gambling hall. Oscar was as mannerly and cautious as Mark. "She is my guest, Mrs. Journey." He even laughs like Mark. "You may leave the way you came." She follows after him and unashamedly pursues him with no let=up, even as he prays in church. "I gambled for a purpose -- there was no sin. We have a history." She is heartless but playful, good for him as they laugh together.

He is fascinated and envisions a church made of glass. "I shall be here until the end; I have much to do." He is an extraordinary chap. Back-biting by unscrupulous managers left him with Mark's tossled hair. The floating church was a glory to behold. What was an excellent film then is even better now, particularly the sound which is a revelation where the tinking glass is concerned.

The technique of using a narrator does not always work but is it is most apt, and in particular at the end. One leaves after watching this film much as one does after a gourmet meal...extremely satisfied with what you have consumed but not wishing to eat another morsel and yet this continues over time so that you do not feel the need to return.

I was transfixed throughout by the "action" within the film. There is certainly much to think about or to delve into afterwards to get the entire picture. The story seems to be without any obvious flaws and the casting is superb with the main players clearly complemetary to each other and the cinematography is superb.

One thing that I had not paid too much attention to during my first viewing was the appalling and barbaric treatment of the indigenous population. Clearly the scene of the massacre is a solitary tale of man's inhumanity to man but the subsequent scene of the abuse of the aboriginal woman in the inn is a more subtle but nevertheless graphic reminder of the way in which settlers have behaved throughout the world. This point carries with it greater poignancy given the recent apology without compensation by the new Australian Prime Minister to the indigenous people for past abuses such as described above.

All in all a feat for the eyes despite the sad and tragic ending clearly reminiscent of the conclusion of Breaking the Waves.B00066FB3O52A351YEOZLLR34MA351YEOZLLR34MDyesciencebabeNorthern California22008-01-09Stimulating and SatisfyingWhile it's true what other reviewers said about it being "slow moving at times" and "not for everyone", if you like a good story - happy and tragic - and beautiful (and sensous) cinematography, costuming, sets and an excellent soundtrack - this may be for you!
The product description says their lives are forever changed by their meeting - but this is far too simple and not true. The story of the changes in each of their lives (before they even meet) already has you gripped in fascination by the time they finally meet together. Throughout, the story takes many turns.
Even though it is not completely a happy ending, it is ultimately sweet and satisfying.
I don't see any special features listed on the DVD (I own an old videotape). I figured I was the only person who actually liked it, but I guess not. All the national critics sure hated this low-key retelling of Jekyll and Hyde. Despite critics' comments to contrary, I found this an intelligent adaptation of the famous story.

The muted colors with the grey overtones caught my eye and were very interesting to observe. Julia Roberts also was interesting to watch: no makeup, no smile, just sad, somber looks yet still appealing.
People don't care for subtly in films anymore. They want in-your-face smash-ups, gore, violent conflicts....and a lot of it. This movie is extremely low-key.

I have to admit that it's hard to believe Roberts' character "Mary Reilly" would not recognize Jekyll from Hyde (played by John Malkovich) when he didn't change facial appearances! And, yes, the film, generally-speaking, is a real downer. Yet, for some odd reason, despite the above paragraph, I recommend the film to people who enjoy slower films and slow suspense, even if they have to suspend a little believability. I thought it was oddly fascinating. B00004W4UB50A2GA2SO3YK6CXIA2GA2SO3YK6CXIEsperanza ReynoldsHope ReynoldsMiami Lakes, Florida02009-02-15Mystery, Suspense... Mary Reiley, masterfully played by Julia Roberts and Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde brilliantly performed by John Malkovich is a suspenseful recreation of the split personality of a man who has an inner evil twin who takes the lives of others as he experiences rage and the desire to control.

If you know the background of the original work by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, you know that it is about split personalities, surfacing the fact that within each of us there is the possibility of good and evil and that every human being, if all virtue is removed [kindness, compassion, love, hope, charity, faith] is capable of committing atrocities and go back to animal instincts.

The duality we find in ourselves, if not dealt with in an effort to understand our faults, may create personalities that project evil onto others, surfacing anger, rage, depression and lack of self esteem. Humans that do not deal with their inner demons end displaying an outward respectability that is nothing but social hypocrisy that masks a tendency for inner sins, whether these be lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy or pride.

The movie is set in London and the plot for the most part, takes place in the mansion, with an intuitive and inquisitive Mary Reiley providing her interpretation of the conflict experienced by Dr. Jekyll. Mary Reiley suffered greatly as a child in the hands of an abusive father and as such, she understands the evil within others and how harmful it was to her, therefore, how harmful it is to those that Mr. Hyde encounters during the night.

The plot scenes are set in dark places, Mary Reiley is asked to visit houses of ill repute, where Glenn Close plays the part of the "madam" who will permit Dr. Jekyll to engage in all sorts of evil acts as long as he pays a good price.

We get the feeling that Mary Reiley ends loving her kind employer, the first man to ever protect and confide in her, and that through this love and acceptance of his good and evil, she inspires the evil side to put an end to all suffering. If you like mystery, suspense, horror and dark romance, this is a movie for you! While not our favorite type movie, we were thrilled by the performances. Don't miss it!

StrnadWashed up jockTulsa, OK02008-12-18Not-so Pretty WomanI saw this movie in the theatres when it first came out in 1996, and have to admit that at the time, it didn't leave much of an impression. I'm a reader of classic literature, and was familiar enough with Robert Louis Stevenson's original masterpiece, though I have never read the modern adaptation by Valerie Martin, on which this movie is largely based. I'm not one of the purists who gets bent out of shape if a movie deviates all that much from a written source, provided the source is fictional, and the movie well-done in it's own right. I actually appreciated the twist of telling the classic Jeckyll-Hyde story from the viewpoint of a woman, as this was particularly absent in Stevenson's original work.

I picked up a copy of the DVD the other day (not sure why), and after watching this little-known, atmospheric movie again the other night, have decided that it's better the second time around. Maybe that's the better way to judge most movies after all: some clearly blow you away with the first viewing, but many films like that, when viewed again after the distance of many years, lose their luster- "Mary Reilly" is the other way around for me. Watching it again after 12 years, I appreciated many aspects of the movie that just slipped by me the first time.

For one, while much has been made of the "miscasting" of Julia Roberts, and her on-again, off-again Irish accent in this film, I think it's actually one of her better acting performances. I'm not a fan of Robert's, mainly because the bulk of her movies involve precious little serious acting: most of the time she is just asked to look pretty. "Mary Reilly" (where she is a house servant to the troubled Dr. Jeckyll- John Malkovich- in 1885 London) is the only movie of hers I have seen where her body is not primarily on display. Wearing period attire throughout the film, and with generally no makeup to embellish her face (which actually looks somewhat scarred and even haggard in many scenes), she manages to convey Mary's conflicting emotions very well.....she clearly has a fondness for Dr. Jeckyll, and conveys both fear and paradoxical attraction to the malevolent Hyde without being given all that much to say. Some real acting going on here, and while some just call this miscasting, I appreciated a side of this actress that I've not seen on display before. Her 50:50 success with the Irish accent didn't bother me as much as it apparently did for many other reviewers: at least she tried. Odd that no one gets on Malkovich (a superb actor, particularly in menacing roles like Hyde) for NEVER attempting the same. What bothered me more about Malkovich's character was not the lack of any attempt to make Hyde physically much different from Jeckyll (which many thought was hilariously thin), but the fact that Hyde's voice was NO different than Jeckyll's, other than being given more disturbing things to say. In any event, kudos to Julia Roberts for going "outside-the-box" in this role. Perhaps her role in "Michael Collins" came close to this, with a similarly subdued performance, including the accent.

The main theme of the movie is of course well-known to fans of Stevenson's work, and my only complaint here is I wish the screenwriters had gone a little deeper with Malkovich's character, and given him a few more lines and a little more screen time by himself, to explore the timeless theme of good and evil within the heart of every man. A little less time dwelling on Julia Roberts face, and a little more with glimpses into Jeckyll's torment would have worked better.

The costumes and sets to recreate Victorian London were well-done, though the squalor of the back streets and the forboding atmospheric fog were only given a small role in the film- and at times the interior lighting effects were at odds with the candle-light era: a bit too bright at times, when darkness, fog, and obscurity would not only have been more realistic, but more effective.

The musical score, which totally escaped my attention the first time I saw this film, adds nicely to the tension leading up to Mary's discovery of Jeckyll's secret. It's an understated soundtrack, so you won't find yourself humming bars from it months later- but it clearly adds to the atmosphere of the film, and never detracts from a scene.

The pacing of the movie is deliberately slow, and the violence brief, never gratuitous, and largely implied. But, at 108 minutes, I never felt the movie dragged unnecessarily. Just about right.

I give "Mary Reilly" 3 stars overall. My measure of a movie's worth is whether I would watch it more than once, and whether it holds it's entertainment value after a number of years. In this respect, "Mary Reilly" comfortably measures up. Not a classic, but worth viewing.

I'll take it over "Pretty Woman" anyday. Well, if I'm in the mood, anyway.....B00004W4UB40A1THEOO66IXT3QA1THEOO66IXT3QJoyce E. Hatcher02008-07-16Mary ReillyThis is a well acted and directed alternative version of the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde classic tale. It does have some graphic scenes which would make it unsuitable for younger children. It is one of John Malkovich's best acting as the characters that he portrays are believable.B00004W4UB30A28WJUJF6D2ULAA28WJUJF6D2ULAPenny DreadfulUnder Your Skin02008-02-29Nice Use Of Alternate History Within A Work Of FictionRe-telling a classic tale from a new perspective, usually courtesy of a relatively minor character from the original work, is an old and in some cases dubious literary tradition. It has been undertaken with deliciously successful results in, say, The Return of Moriarty, by John Gardner, or has fallen shamefully flat: Donald McCaig's recent Rhett Butler's People comes to mind.

The 1996 film Mary Reilly is the lukewarm but not charmless on-screen adaptation of the superior 1990 "alternate history" novel by the acclaimed Valerie Martin, who in penning her tale drew on Robert Louis Stevenson's magnum opus, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. In the film as in the novel, Mary Reilly, an Irish maidservant far from home and melancholy, lately given work in the household of one Dr Henry Jekyll, a London gentleman and medical researcher in the year 1885, forms a friendship of sorts with her dual-natured employer, and stands in as a background figure in the events described to greater effect in the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Inexplicable mega-star Julia Roberts is passable here and courageously attempts an Irish accent with moderate success--hey, I can't do one well, either, Julia, and trust me, I've tried---while John Malkovich, not quite the Dr. Jekyll the original author described, is still enjoyably creepy in this role. Though the murders in this movie are largely implied and committed off-screen, there's a compensatory scene in which a tub full of fresh-caught eels meet their maker in the Jekyll kitchen and that should churn even the toughest stomachs.

Fans of the Stevenson novel tend to either love this second take on the old tale or else recoil at the ballsy blasphemy of what Martin and film maker Christopher Hampton (Atonement) did. For those who loved the movie, I say please read the much-better novel. And for those fans of Stevenson's original who sneered at the movie, I'd note here that Valerie Martin's book is a much more a case of loving tribute to the nineteenth-century masterpiece than Hampton's motion picture.

Instead of being in the laboratory where the good doctor unlocks his evil twin, we stay in the mansion overlooking the lab. An inquisitive, proper maid, Mary Reilly (Julia Roberts) slowly becomes Dr. Jekyll's confidant. Rather than a horror story, the film is a spooky mystery that keeps us in the dark, and what a wonderful dark Frears and his designers have fashioned. Roberts carries the movie, digging deep for her best dramatic work to date. Though some may wish she'd show more passion, she holds her emotions appropriately in check. The movie faced considerable, well-documented troubles, including the reshooting of several scenes months after the initial production. This probably affected the finale, which has little impact and nearly ruins a good thing. --Doug ThomasB000053VB4Mystic Pizza0790731525The Pelican Brief6305428395I Love Trouble6304708793Conspiracy Theory0800177789Flatliners163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740118Class Differences291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video291309Period Piece163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video163407General163396Horror404276Genres130DVD139452Video1081770114-for-3 Drama1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1081780114-for-3 Horror1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1693950114-for-3 All DVDs1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video411880Barlow, Tim411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video412142Bassett, Linda411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video413916Boxer, Stephen411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video414054Brady, Moya411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418044Close, Glenn416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418186Cole, George416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video424288Gallagher, Bronagh424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video424332Gambon, Michael424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video425376Goodman, Henry424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video432924Leaf, Richard432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video435004Malkovich, John434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video443832Roberts, Julia442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video456898Frears, Stephen456580( F )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video573628All Sony Pictures Titles516494Sony Pictures Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579536( M )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405388011R405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620910111990 - 1999562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603113011Dolby603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671508011Dolby671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR2B4VRJJ6K1ID6If you want to discover Julia Roberts (1967 - )R30E02I9S7FGNGThe Worst of Julia RobertsR19FQ2NN6M5OVRIf you want to discover Glenn Close (1947 - )R2L3ZZ3N2AM6CPIf you want to discover John Malkovich (1953 - )R1PZ1CDQDB3HNTanne's movie mix 2R8RU9JVR55A1QThese Movies Are Really Weird...And I Love ThemR15Q28I9WV7FS9Julia RobertsR3AQRZ86BS3P7RHalloween Movies - Varying AgesR25C43S0T2VT5RMovies I never expected to like!R30LWFB4LS7EG6Movies that last 108 minutes

In 1946, as a propaganda move, the Soviet government invited back Soviet emigrƩs who had fled to France during the Russian revolution. The story is of a Soviet doctor, Alexei Golovin, and his French wife, Marie. When they arrive in Odessa, they are met by machine-gun toting soldiers who actually gun down one of the returnees. They are transported to Kiev, where they are allotted one room in a "boarding house." Unfortunately for them, Marie is accused of being a capitalist spy, and life quickly goes downhill from there. The movie chronicles their 10 year attempt to flee Russia and get back to the "Free West". Movie is in French and Russian, with English subtitles. This is a very exciting story. I show this movie to my upper level French students, who adore it!B00003CXF450AJRFZ0VZ0LD26AJRFZ0VZ0LD26Readercvrcak1Chicago, IL USA02008-01-23Life in Stalin's RussiaThis film in French and Russian language was made to show the story of the state of Russia shortly after WWII. It starts in year 1946 with a premise that all Russian expatriates living abroad since year 1917 (October Revolution) were invited for re-patriation back to Russia. We see a group of Russians leaving France with great hopes of reconnecting with their fatherland, offering new government their skills, talents and love for the country in an effort to build a new society after the devastating war. We know that this bait will end badly from the start. As these naive citizens step on the Russia soil the tragedy hits: elderly are separated from the young, families are being divided and before we know it a young French man of Russian decent is shot to death from the back by the eager Russian soldier. Main protagonist of this story is a doctor who with wife and a young son gets rude awakening of what is the future for his family. Deeply devoted to his wife, he will do whatever it takes top protect his family. As time passes and the differences and tension between the couple increases, wife is becoming more determined to escape Russian and get back to France. In the process and circumstances around them, she establishes relationship with a young Russian man who happens to live in the same apartmens with her family. Without desclosing the plot, we learn about two people so desparate for freedom and nothing to loose that will do anything to reclaim it. Over a period of 10 years lives of all of them are so profoundly changed that is hard to believe how can anyone endure such oppresion. It will take another 30 years after their escape until borders are open again and Russian citizens can choose to stay or immigrate to any country of their choice. See the rest of the movies by the talented Russian director Sergei Bodrov and his son who appears in many of his films, this one included (he had a role of young Russian lodger Sasha).Amazon.comLike The Thief (1997), which was also nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, Regis Wargnier's East-West is a turbulent romance set against the political backdrop of post-World War II Russia. But instead of a man, a woman, and a child, the story revolves around a man, a woman, a child--and another man.
Shortly after the war, Alexei (Oleg Menshikov), his wife, Marie (Sandrine Bonnaire), and their son travel to Russia from France to make a new life for themselves. But they quickly find that the situation in Alexei's homeland isn't quite as advertised and that they can't leave. Sacha (Sergie Bodrov Jr.) is a young athlete who lives in the same overcrowded apartment complex. Like Marie, he wants to escape, while Alexei decides to make the best out of an awful situation. Inevitably, Marie and Alexei grow apart as Sacha and Marie grow close, but one of these characters is harboring a secret that won't be revealed until the end. The film does double time as a thriller in that, at any time, any of these characters could be imprisoned or killed--including French actress Gabrielle (Catherine Deneuve, star of Wargnier's Oscar winning Indochine). She befriends Marie during a tour of Russia and offers to help her and Sacha make their getaway.
At its worst, East-West threatens to strain credibility, but Wargnier's assured direction and the sympathetic performances he elicits from his cast make for a believable and compelling drama. Although not an epic on the scale of Doctor Zhivago, Wargnier takes a more intimate approach to similar subject matter and, arguably, offers the superior bittersweet conclusion. --Kathy FennessyB00008ZZ9MPrisoner of the MountainsB000OVLBGCThe Lives of OthersB000U43A6MMediterraneoB00005JPX8La Vie en Rose (Extended Version)0767831411The Thief163328General163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video503234Drama284929France284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video503224General284929France284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video722736011General AAS284929France284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video284938Russia284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video284940Spain284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video502912Drama502904By Genre163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video163326French193685By Original Language163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video163339Russian193685By Original Language163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video503040Melodrama502916By Theme163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video503134Period Piece502916By Theme163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video503100Politics502916By Theme163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video291298Melodrama291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video163392Political Drama291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video572116Marriage163394Love & Romance163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video291309Period Piece163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video412142Bassett, Linda411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video413662Bonnaire, Sandrine411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video420402Deneuve, Catherine419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video442416Puri, Om440340( P )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355829011Drama355824011By Genre355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355842011French355835011By Original Language355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355855011Russian355835011By Original Language355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355882011Melodrama355859011By Theme355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355886011Period Piece355859011By Theme355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355722011France355719011European Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355732011Russia355719011European Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355733011Spain355719011European Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355668011General355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video357292011Melodrama357275011By Theme357227011Indie & Art House251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video357296011Period Piece357275011By Theme357227011Indie & Art House251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video357228011General357227011Indie & Art House251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video573628All Sony Pictures Titles516494Sony Pictures Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video722837011General AAS1077592Sony Pictures Classics516494Sony Pictures Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579520( E )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405387011PG-13405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620910111990 -

The Hours was pure Oscar bait--a prestigey adaptation of an intellectual novel (see The English Patient for another) with Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep for God's sake--but beneath its pretty shell the film is pretty empty; by no means a bad film, it's a decent drama that benefited from a good marketing campaign and December release.B00008XOF951A3EBHHCZO6V2A4A3EBHHCZO6V2A4Amaranthmusic fanNorthern California12009-01-10The Hours of Our Lives"The Hours" is a quiet, meditative piece about what makes life worth living.

"The Hours" is a contemplative masterpiece.B00008XOF942A1W67810BRQSDOA1W67810BRQSDOJ'RoThe Only OneTulsa, OK32008-11-06SIMPLY AMAZING"The Hours" is a beautifully crafted, thought-provoking, brilliantly acted movie.

I highly recommend it to anyone who is not above soul-searching and exploring the depths of the female psyche.B00008XOF922A2R4XG0L7Z01V8A2R4XG0L7Z01V8Dumb Blonde ReviewingI'm A Lonely Angel Stuck On The Slow PathIn my bed22008-10-01DepressingI bought The Hours for cheap, so I was impressed, and for once, ended up watching it within a couple of days of buying - not something I do often, judging by my "to watch" pile!

Dalloway0783240171Out of AfricaB00005JLQHFar From Heaven163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740116Artists & Writers291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740126Psychological Drama291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740148Mothers & Sons740138Family Life163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722752011General AAS740138Family Life163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video291309Period Piece163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video1081770114-for-3 Drama1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1693950114-for-3 All DVDs1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video412142Bassett, Linda411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418254Collette, Toni416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419346Culkin, Michael416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419738Danes, Claire419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video420726Dillane, Stephen419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video426992Harris, Ed426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video429632Janney, Allison429340( J )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video431330Kidman, Nicole430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video435606Martindale, Margo434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video437946Moore, Julianne434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video443164Reilly, John C442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video443518Richardson, Miranda442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video448344Streep, Meryl444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3234081All Paramount3234061Paramount Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3234131Drama3234061Paramount Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579526( H )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390120011Full Screen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405387011PG-13405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620920112000 & Newer562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR2FP5YZB79CJDMeryl Streep; Premier Movie Actress' Greatest PerformancesRCPAP9OYWM4J7Runner-Ups for Best Supporting Actress OscarRYEI507ZT52KS10 out of 10 movies ( II )Q3SB9OYLAKYO9 Excellent Drama Movies11RYA1B6KWA10Best Lead Performances of 20023AB104P4NMVQ6Movies I've Seen In 2004 - List IVVBA404YWZPILMeryl Streep3NX807GM5DC2STop 10 Films of 20022GAOPXI8NJJRKMOVIES I LOVE3HYW5Y3J4FPCHways to beat boredom!

SalonisNymphadora TonksGlendale, AZ USA02009-01-26A few laughs between the many bumps in this film...Let me start by saying that this film is terribly mislabeled as a comedy when it is, in fact, very much a drama. Yes, there are times when I laughed out loud but I chose this film because I was in the mood for a comedy. Had I been in the mood for a drama I am sure I would have scored the film much higher.

"East is East" is the story of a Pakistani father, George Khan, his Caucasian British wife, Ella, and their seven children. The acting is superb, the writing is excellent, and the soundtrack is wonderful. Having said all of that, I do have a few issues with the film. (SPOILER ALERT) First, the oldest son, Nazir, just kind of disappears for a while without any explanation. Did he run away? Did he kill himself? Where did he go? We find out about halfway through the film when his father pronounces that he is dead. This leaves the viewer wondering how one could have missed such an important event, but a few minutes later we realize that Nazir is only dead to him. In fact, we discover, albeit something I guessed in the first ten minutes of the film, that Nazir is gay. This is all the more reason for his Pakistani father to call him dead.

My second issue with the film is that I really liked all of the characters, even the strict and traditional George. Ella is charming the way she can talk him down from almost any argument with typical British humor mixed with a few choice swear words. The kids adore their mother and, although they disagree with him, they love their father. This led me to believe that the film was going to be a "Dad is a strict traditional man, kids and mom are not, so this is the story of how everyone changes Dad." (SPOILER ALERT) Unfortunately, the story became, "Dad is an abusive and closed-minded bastard and starts beating on anyone, including mom, who dares to defy him." I just don't understand why the story had to change this way. I left the film wishing Ella would leave her bastard husband and raise her kids on her own. We went from the tenderness of how Ella would ask George if he would like some tea and he would reply, "just half a cup", to George calling her a "bloody b****" and giving her a black eye. Why? My final issue with the film is the ending. (SPOILER ALERT) We are left with nothing changed in the family other than the children discovering that their father isn't just strict, he is cruel. I just feel incomplete after watching "East is East". I get that the Pakistani culture is very different from British culture and that, particularly in the 1970's, the west was not very open to accepting this new group of immigrants. What else came of this story? I don't feel warm and fuzzy toward this culture if George is a shining of example of how the men truly behave. Why did he choose to marry outside of his own culture if he hates it so much? Why raise children with a mother who is not Muslim and not from Pakistan if you are just going to teach them that it is unacceptable to marry anyone who is not from Pakistan? I feel like I got a glimpse of a very dysfunctional family who will never see a happy ending and that is just not why I choose to watch films. I watch films to learn something new, or to laugh, to perhaps cry a little, but overall, I watch films to have a few hours of enjoyment. I watch films to forget my own problems for a while. After watching this, I just feel like I would have been better off calling my own family back home and hearing about their issues and problems. B00004UCHA30A28WJUJF6D2ULAA28WJUJF6D2ULAPenny DreadfulUnder Your Skin02008-02-27A Comedy? While this film doubtlessly gives realistic insight into the culture shock of a traditional Pakistani man struggling to maintain the customs of his homeland in 1970's England---and to force those same customs onto his assimilating family---what I can't understand is how so many people found this movie to be both heartwarming and comedic. At least that's the billing it got when it was recommended to me by friends, and also how I heard it touted years ago by Terry Gross on NPR's Fresh Air. The main character here, George Khan, played by India's prolific Om Puri, is among the least sympathetic figures in all of recent cinema, which would be fine if the feeling was he was being set up to be presented that way, but the impression I got was that we were meant to receive him as more of a misguided soul than an abusive tyrant. He beats his wife, alienates his children by among other things seeking to force arranged marriages onto them, is a bigamist (of sorts) and a total bigot who thinks all Indians are evil and out to get him and other Pakistanis, yet the situations and clues in the background music seem determined to dismiss his antics as humorous. So spousal abuse and overseer-like control of children is funny, then, is it? As I watched this film, all I could think of was good riddance to Mr. Khan's traditions and customs, and long live the tolerance we have here in the west. I found the lives of his children, especially his hairdresser son and English-born wife, to be much more interesting than the self-torturing Khan. East Is East has merit but that comes as a study of cultures in a time and place not long past rather than from its central character, George Khan. Its classification as a comedy puzzles me.

I am 100% sure that the director, producer and writer of this movie never visited Pakistan and neither they studied a Pakistani family very closely before making this movie. This movie is a perfect example of an Indian product having Pakistani label on it. In other words, they labelled it Pakistani but every thing in it is Indian. When ever they want to show bad side of Indian culture or some thing insulting about it, they label it as Pakistani.

In simple terms, this movie is disgusting and if you really want to watch a bunch of Indians urinating all over the place and you have enough money to waste to see people urinating then you should purchase this movie.

"Indian Urination Camp" would have been a more suitable title for this movie instead of "east is east".B00004UCHA50A3OX96K3EU7FODA3OX96K3EU7FODKenneth J. AtchityStory MerchantDappertutto02006-11-01Compelling StorytellingWith a rare combination of edge, grit, song and dance, heart, obscenity, and hilarity, the director takes this stage play and turns it into an unrelenting examination of the explosive tensions involved in a Pakistani family's assimilation into British society. The performances are all remarkable, and you won't mistake this for something you've seen before even though it has elements of "Bend It Like Beckham." Amazon.comManchester in 1971 is not the ideal time and place to raise a proper Pakistani family. But George Khan (Om Puri), father of seven unruly moppets and husband to a willful British wife (Linda Bassett), is determined to wield his influence over his clan. But what a clan this is, with Nazir (Ian Aspinall), who refuses his arranged wife; Saleem (Chris Bisson) who creates--shall we say controversial?--works of art; Tariq (Jimi Mistry), the mod boy who lives for discos and English girls; Meenah (Archie Panjabi), the only girl and tomboy extraordinaire; and Sajid (Jordan Routledge), who lives in a dirty fur-trimmed parka. Abdul (Raji James) and Maneer (Emil Marwa) stay more quietly in the background, although they lend their voices to the chorus of dissent against traditional ways.
East Is East is Damien O'Donnell's directorial debut, and he nails the raucous tone from the opening scene, a church parade where the Pakistani children must do some deft maneuvering to avoid being seen by their Muslim father. At times such as these, the film is a straightforward comedy, and the children milk the cultural differences for every laugh they can. Yet the film takes a more somber turn when Saleem balks at his father's insistence on arranging Saleem's marriage. Puri is magnificent straddling the line between lovable father and brute enemy as he demands that the others obey his will, and his performance can be difficult to watch as he metamorphoses. Sympathies toward the characters shift throughout the film, highlighting the superb acting of the entire cast. Ultimately, though, humor wins out, making East Is East a tremendously fun film. --Jenny Brown6305692629My Son the FanaticB00006AW0IMonsoon WeddingB00008R9KFMy Beautiful LaundretteB00005JM2YBend It Like Beckham (Widescreen Edition)B000U2U0E4The Namesake163306General163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video290941Comic Action163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video579584Comedy579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video579586Drama579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video579588General579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video722735011General AAS579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video163371General163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video722745011General AAS291102British163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video412142Bassett, Linda411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video426908Harkishin, Jimmi426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video429628Janjua, Kaleem429340( J )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video430268Jones, Ruth429340( J )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video442416Puri, Om440340( P )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355712011Comedy355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355713011Drama355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355715011General355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video468392All Titles468390Miramax Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video541276Comedy468390Miramax Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video541278Drama468390Miramax Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video541280Foreign Spotlight468390Miramax Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579520( E )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405388011R405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620920112000 & Newer562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603113011Dolby603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671508011Dolby671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR2U6GS9UZDG3SFUnique Foreign MoviesR1Z1KFJTKR652MMovies of the EastR287MYW9V8XO46i C it in the CINEMA (1) !R24R7XR9NOQOEDGreat Movies .. ArthurTacoma, Washington02008-12-22Able melodramaThis is a fine film in many ways. The acting is superb, and so is the camera work. The shots in Wales are stunning. The script is good....until the last fifteen minutes or so. Writer-Director Fellowes simply lacked a believable or even interesting ending. The entire script collapses into soap opera, leaving sensible viewers frustrated. What could have been a magnificent movie turns out to be mere tv network melodrama.B000CCW2O830A3R2YB0WTTB0IJA3R2YB0WTTB0IJwdanthemanwwdanthemanwGeneva, Switzerland02008-09-28JULIAN FELLOWES, OPUS 1*** 2005. Written and directed by Julian Fellowes, this film is an adaptation of Nigel Balchin's A way through the wood. A seemingly happy couple's life is turned upside down when Anne hits a cyclist while driving the car of her lover Bill Bule. I personally consider Emily Watson as one of the best actresses of the last twenty years, so I simply had to see SEPARATE LIES. The film is not a masterpiece but is still enjoyable thanks to the actors's performance. And, while watching the film, you can also imagine Italian or Hispanic actors playing the main characters (very funny). Already forgotten. B000CCW2O840A1TEMNM9ZEOLJ6A1TEMNM9ZEOLJ6Bradley F. SmithMiami Beach, FL02008-09-04Good stuffGreat interiors and exteriors in this sex and lies adult melodrama from the Brits. True, the husband and wife have no chemistry, but that's the point, isn't it? The lover has a wonderfully hungry look to him. The plot is nicely twisted, but not overly complex. You could do much worse than watch this for an evening's entertainment.B000CCW2O811A2ISQO1LCTX1JXA2ISQO1LCTX1JXThe Purple HeartUSA12008-06-19One star is generous enoughthe writing / storyline and direction of this bomb are awful. The characters are not believeable. Every time you think the movie is over then another scene starts. Wilkinson plays the part of a solicitor who is too forgiving of his unfaithful wife played by Emma Watson. None of the characters are likeable. Just pitiable. You have been warned. I wish I had those 2 hours of my life back that I wasted on this movie.B000CCW2O831ATXL536YX71TRATXL536YX71TRKerrLines"Movies,Music,Theatre"Baltimore,MD22007-12-16Great script, but miserable direction and execution in SEPARATE LIESSEPARATE LIES is a well written screenplay by Oscar winner Julian Fellowes (GOSFORD PARK)that intricately entwines four people in Upper Crust England in a web of deceit, cover up,lies and infidelity when a housekeeper's husband is struck and killed by a speeding Land Rover while on his bicycle. The screenplay has beautiful twists and turns and is quite tight. The rub is that Fellowes does not have a good grasp on how to direct his own screenplay and the immense talents of Rupert Everett,Tom Wilkinson and Emily Watson.A film that has so much promise, especially with composer Stanislas Syrewicz (CLANDESTINE MARRIAGE,NORA,CRIME AND PUNISHMENT)never reaches any real tension or climax that is promised in the script.Fellowes is first and foremost a fine actor (JANE EYRE,DAMAGE,MARTIN CHUZZELWIT) turned writer and is a darn good at both.He is NOT a director, and SEPARATE LIES is a brilliant example of his first and only attempt thus far.The movie barely shifts any gears and stays relatively in park for all 86 minutes.Everett,Wilkinson and Watson, the veritable who's-who of the UK acting world are wasted in the worst way (big time). The film is as dry as dust and shows no promise of any future success for Fellowes as a director. The screenplay should have been shopped around! DVD offers no extras. One time viewing only. DescriptionSecrets and lies spiral out of control in this heart-pounding suspense thriller. Tom Wilkinson and Emily Watson star as James and Anna, a seemingly happy couple whose marriage begins to unravel when he learns sheĆ's been having an affair with their seductive neighbor Bill (Rupert Everett). When a man turns up dead, James faces another shocking revelation about his wife and her lover, forcing all three into a cover-up that may cost them everything.B001NFNFNUChangelingB001PPGAIAAustraliaB0007PALGGKinseyB000E6ESL2StayB000OT6V0KThe Siege (Martial Law Edition)579586Drama579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video579588General579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video722735011General AAS579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740168Haunted by the Past291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740126Psychological Drama291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video745716Crumbling Marriages163394Love & Romance163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video745718Infidelity & Betrayal163394Love & Romance163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video572116Marriage163394Love & Romance163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video923878General512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video412142Bassett, Linda411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video422424Everett, Rupert421742( E )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video439094Neville, John438726( N )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video439456Norris, Hermione438726( N )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video451746Watson, Emily451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video452542Wilkinson, Tom451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355713011Drama355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355715011General355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video908716All Fox Titles90871420th Century Fox Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579548( S )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390120011Full Screen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405388011R405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620920112000 & Newer562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603113011Dolby603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671508011Dolby671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR1WZ4VO0IZ5H7UIf you want to discover Emily Watson (1967 - )RL1SYD282F44NKnow me by the films I see - September 2008R3EXYT08XWPM3NObscure Movie Thrillers I LikedRA5LLC2VO01UCLittle Known Gems2C9R2E5ZN3S2Zgreat interior design on film
